O’Neils of Windham Help Mechanical Mayhem Team in Semi-Finals Battle
submitted by Dan Chamberland April 26-28, FIRST Robotics Team 1519, Mechanical Mayhem, competed at the FIRST Robotics Competition Championship in St. Louis, MO. The team advanced further than they ever have in previous years at the Championship. They were ranked fi fth in their division of 100 teams after qualifying matches. Their alliance with Team 1983 from Des Moines, WA, and Team 181 from Hartford, CT, beat the fourth ranked alliance in the quarter-fi nal playoff matches and advanced to semi-fi nals. This year’s game, “Rebound Rumble,” was designed to mimic a basketball court. At both ends of the playing fi eld are the driver stations and an array of basketball hoops. There is one low hoop, two middle hoops, and one high hoop. Across the narrow dimension of the fi eld is a 4 inch high wall, along which are placed three tilting bridges at a height of 12 inches. The bridges at the edges are color coded for each alliance, and the center bridge, called the Coopertition bridge, is available for both alliances. The semi-fi nal matches were very exciting to watch and very
close. Mechanical Mayhem lost the fi rst semi-fi nal 73 to 68. Semi- fi nal two went right down to the wire. In the beginning 15 second autonomous period, both alliances scored many baskets. This was followed by intense scoring by both alliances in tele-operator period. With about 15 seconds left on the clock, there was a big collision between 1983 with an opposing alliance robot at the center of the fi eld. After that, 1983 rushed to the blue alliance bridge and triple- balanced successfully with 181 and 1519, already on the bridge. The red alliance also successfully balanced all three of their robots for the 40 point bonus. It was a very exciting, hard-fought match. The combined score of 121 to 94 was the highest combined score of any match at the championship, and may be the record for the FIRST Robotics Competition season! The FIRST Robotics Competition is an annual engineering design
challenge for high school students - working with professional engineering and business mentors - to design and build a robot and compete in high-intensity tournaments that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of team strategy and collaboration, and the determination of students. The program is a life-changing, career- molding experience.
