Although it is much too early in the season to be predicting any trends, it appears that the Toyo Tires Formula 1600 Cham- pionship will be fought out be- tween seasoned veteran Shane Jantzi and 18-year-old series sophomore Michael Adams. That being said, there are still eight races remaining on the calendar and a trio of tal- ented contenders – Steve Bam- ford, Caitlin Johnston and Jack Mitchell Jr. – are within striking distance of the title. In the weekend’s opening contest, Adams took control of the 22 minute, 12 lap event from the pole position, leading Jantzi to the checkered flag with a comfortable 14.972 sec- ond margin of victory. Bamford crossed the line 2.916 seconds behind Jantzi for

third and Mitchell leading Johnston by a car length to round out the top five A Class finishers. Past Champion An- drew Mason, making a rare F1600 tour start, was tops in the B Class, crossing the stripe in sixth overall.

Disappointed with his second place showing in Race 1, Jantzi and the crew of the #71 RF-02 Van Diemen made some “signif- icant changes” overnight and took advantage of much im- proved handling to claim the pole position for Sunday’s late afternoon feature race. Using his front row starting spot, Jantzi snatched the early lead, but quickly found his mir- rors filled with the threatening black #59 of Adams. Biding his time, Adams used the draft to close onto Jantzi’s tailpipe, out braking the race leader at the end of the back straight to grab the lead on Lap 5.

Despite Jantzi in close pur-

suit, Adams held on to the lead to claim his second win of the weekend and his third of the campaign.

Completing the podium was

BGR’s Jack Mitchell Jr., who fended off race-long challenges from Johnston. At the finish, the difference between the two was a mere .616 seconds. Continuing his string of top fives was Steve Bamford (#07) while Mason led the B Class to the checkered flag again.

raCeontario Gt SprintS When a team hits the ‘sweet spot’ in car setup, there is often very little that can be done by their rivals to thwart a winning streak. In the three RaceOntario GT Sprints contests Rocco Mar- ciello (#153, GT-1 Triumph TR- 7), John Hansen (#30, GT-2 BMW), Perry Iannuzzi (#6, GT- 4 Pontiac) and Derrick Bassant (#203, GT-6 Sentra) all enjoyed a winning combination, as these four competitors swept to class victories in each of the 20 minute races. In the GT-3 ranks, Patrick Tal- enti (#187 Porsche), Paul Myers (#06 Porsche) and Michael DelleDonne (#81) shared in victory celebrations over the course of the weekend. Robert Calisi (#39 Honda) scored the GT-5 class win in the weekend’s opening race and Toronto’s Robert Burgess won in his #145 Porsche 944 in the Sunday doubleheader.

The Paragon Competition GT Challenge Series is usually con- tent with forcing their entrants to survive a one hour enduro on any given weekend, but at the DAC Trillium Trophy Races the organizers doubled the challenge and scheduled a pair of 60 minute contests. Like their GT Sprints

cousins, success seems to come in streaks.

Ftda Formula 1200 SerieS Four-time and defending se- ries champion Michael Iamundi came within .272 seconds of a weekend Formula-1200 sweep. Only the determined efforts of London, ON’s Andrew McMur- ray kept him from scoring a three-peat of race victories. Lapping the four-kilometer Shannonville circuit in a time of 2:00.691 seconds, Iamundi took the pole position a full second ahead of stablemate Spencer Todd. At the drop of the green flag for Race One, Ia- mundi sprung into the lead, but spent the next ten laps ex- changing the point with Mc- Murray, eventually taking the checkered flag (by .100 sec- onds) over McMurray, Todd and Phil Wang.

Iamundi repeated his win- ning effort in Sunday’s first race, with Todd and McMurray exchanging podium standings. Sunday’s finale was another three-way scramble for victory with Vallis Motorsports driver David Taylor added to the mix. In this 20-minute race, Mc- Murray grabbed the lead at the race’s halfway mark and held off a side-by-side, last lap chal- lenge from Iamundi to take the win, crossing the stripe .272 seconds in front of the defend- ing race winner, with Taylor an- other .208 seconds behind in third place. •
