A Girl’s Breast Friend

So, you’ve got the correct running shoes, the newest technology in sports kit and a training programme that’s going to get you as fit as you want to be. But have you really thought of everything?

One word ladies – boobs! According to Shock Absorber UK 44% of women who exercise regularly do not wear sports bras – a shocking statistic when you think that our breasts can bounce up to 14cm when unsupported during exercise!

Supporting your chest is essential when exercising to minimise bounce which is not only uncomfortable, but also causes the stretching of the coopers ligament – the only ligament that prevents the breasts from sagging. Once this ligament is damaged it is irreversible.

So how do you know if you are wearing the right sports bra? A good sports bra will fit snugly without the underband restricting breathing. A good guide is to ensure

that you can fit two fingers between the underband and the skin without too much trouble.

Look for sports bras with wide straps to help support your bust. Again, you should be able to slide two fingers between the strap and your skin – anymore than this and the straps will not support you adequately, any less and the straps will dig in as you move and workout.

A good sports bra should be so comfortable that you forget you are wearing it. Tere is an excellent choice of styles available ranging from traditional style bras with adjustable straps, to crop tops designed to be worn as outer or under garments.

A lot of workout vests now come with concealed support which is great, however

I would still recommend a good sports bra underneath for double the support. Tere has been huge advances in high performance fabrics that wick away moisture from the skin and this has benefited sports bras greatly.

Look for fabrics such as Coolmax® which has a unique fibre construction to help keep you cool and dry. Another great fabric to look out for is Supplex®, a soft nylon yarn that handles like cotton enabling quick drying- up to 40% faster than cotton. It is also abrasion resistant as well as crease resistant.
