Newportneeds tobemore ‘bullish’call
T
he boss of the Celtic Manor Resort has called on the people of Newport to be ‘more bullish’
about the city. Dylan Matthews said too many
people, especially outside the city, were critical of Newport, at atime when there were actually many positive developments. Speaking at The Forum event at the
University of Wales, Newport City Campus, the chief executive called on businesses and residents in the city to be more positive. “There are too many people talking the place down, and that is wrong.

There are alot of good things going on,” said Mr Matthews. “There is new housing stock, anew
railway station, anew university campus, the redevelopment of Rodney Parade, some very good businesses, and Ithink Newport Council has and is still doing agood job. All of these will make adifference in time. “Newport feels at alow point. There
is too much talk about the city centre. That is being addressed.Weneed to be more bullish.” And speaking about his own
growing business, he said: “I believe the Celtic Manor may be the largest private sector employer in the area now.
“We employ 800 full-time staff, 200
people part-time, and lots of casuals. We also spend in the region of £20m on goods and service with in the Newport post code area.” Mr Matthews said the business
continued to build on the success of the 2010 Ryder Cup, and was investing heavily in an additional conference room, which could accommodate 800 people; 200 more bedrooms; and new, four-bedroom lodge facilities.

DwrCymruset to invest£71m
Dwr Cymru Welsh Water reports that investment in south east Wales during 2011/12 reached £68m – and afurther spend of £71m is underway this year to maintain top quality services to customers. Announcing its financial
results for the past year, Welsh Water reported that its spending programme is on track to deliver an ambitious £1bn boost to water services infrastructure throughout its area over the next three years. Spending in south east
Wales during 2011/12 on maintenance programmes for the company’s drinking water and wastewater systems totalled £39m, with £12m spent on delivering drinking water quality and environmental improvements. Investment of £3m was made supporting economic
growth by ensuring adequate network capacity for new developments and a further £5m was invested to alleviate the risk of sewage flooding to properties. Investment was also
completed on a£40m advanced anaerobic digestion facility at Cardiff wastewater treatment works. The facility extracts
methane gas from wastewater which is then used to produce 21 million kilowatts of electricity ayear –the equivalent of powering 4,000 homes. Reduction in reliance on power from fossil fuels enables Dwr Cymru to keep down customers’ bills. The area also benefited
from part of a£9m investment across the whole of south Wales to reduce leakage from the company’s massive network of water pipes.
