New era for charity as hospice opens

Construction firm opco has completed building the £3m St David’s Foundation Day Care Hospice and chemotherapy outreach clinic in Newport. The state-of-the-art day hospice, at Blackett Avenue,

Malpas, offers traditional day hospice activities together with complementary therapies such as art therapy, children’s support services, carers groups, bereavement groups. A consultant in palliative medicine clinics and a

chemotherapy outreach clinic will also be provided within the new day centre hospice. Emma Saysell, chief executive of St David’s Foundation,

said the hospice at home charity was indebted to the Welsh Assembly Government and Newport City Council for their financial support for the project. The hospice’s current listed, Italianate headquarters at

Cambrian House, St John’s Road, Newport, is to be sold or is available for lease. The freehold price is based on offers around £400,000. Opco regional director Nigel Coulter said: “We are

proud to have delivered such a significant building for St David’s. Opco has built up a wealth of experience in completing a variety of projects for the health care sector over recent months and so we were particularly delighted to be invited to work with the charity to deliver this extremely important day hospice centre.” The St David’s contract, completed in 35 weeks, to

BREEAM rating Very Good, is served by 33 car parking spaces. The architects were KKE Architects, engineers Steve Morgan Associates mechanical and electrical engineers Whitehead Building Services and BREEAM consultants AECOM Building Engineers. Newport-based international construction consultants

Lewis and Lewis Ltd, of Devon Place, Newport were project cost consultants and CDM (construction design & management) co-ordinators on the scheme and were involved from initial feasibility through to the tender and procurement process. Lewis Lewis, director of Corporate & Client Services

(UK & Middle East), said: “We are delighted to have been involved with developing the new hospice. St David’s is a charity which truly is in the heart of the community and delivers care which is personalised to each individual patients and families needs. We are grateful to be part of this new development which will only aim to improve patient care further while delivering the foundations existing values from a very special building.”

Determined Kat gets the cream

Kat Maslowska is one step away from graduating with a university degree after gaining her Diploma of Higher Education in Business. Kat, aged 25, (pictured) born in Poland but

who grew up in Denmark and is now living in Newport, started studying through The Open University’s Business School when she joined Newport financial services business Kymin. Kat had initially worked as an au pair in

Monmouthshire before landing a position with Kymin as an administrator. Kat said: “I had intended

to move to London to study but liked the area and ended up in the financial services by accident. I have come to greatly enjoy the industry and the people I work with. “I have been covering

general administrative tasks, particularly focusing on commissions and reports which I will continue to do, for Kymin. However, once I gain further knowledge within marketing I would like to move into that field if possible, which will hopefully benefit Kymin as

it grows further as a company.” Single minded Kat, who has studied while

working full time aims to complete her degree then the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s qualifications and afterwards a masters degree in marketing at Newport’s university. Kymin operations

director Robin Hall, said: “Kat is a remarkable young woman. The amount of hard work, effort and sheer application Kat has put in simultaneously to her studies and her work with us, is simply astounding. “We have

been delighted to have been able to support her along the way and look forward to her progressing further with us here at Kymin.”
