What sort of business support does the council offer? Newport has an expert business support team which can offer assistance to anyone whether they are looking to relocate, start-up or they are an already established business in the city. Skilled advisors can help find suitable premises, guide people through council-related regulations, help with getting financial support and assist with accessing expert advice from partner agencies as well as supply other general advice. The council itself offers a number
of financial incentives for companies starting up, relocating to or expanding.
What about networking groups (does the council run any or are they involved in any)? Newport representatives are members of a number of networking clubs including the M4 business club and the South Wales Chamber of Commerce.
How would the council like to see the future regeneration of the area pan out over the next few years? We recognise that Newport, like many other towns and cities around

the UK, has been – and continues to be – affected by the world wide recession. However, everyone is determined to do everything in their power to try and make the visions we still have for regeneration to become a reality. One of our top priorities is the city centre. The Friars Walk scheme is making
excellent progress and, although there are no guarantees, it is one of only four such projects going ahead in the UK at the moment. Debenhams is on board as the key anchor store; a major cinema operator has signed up and more announcements about other retailers are expected shortly. Scarborough also has planning
permission to redevelop the Cambrian Centre and the new offices it will be creating will become the new home of Admiral in Newport. A major refurbishment of the indoor market is also due to begin this summer along with improvements to the public realm in Commercial Street and High Street.
