individual behaviour but also the culture of the workplace, lifting morale, improving teamwork and encouraging colleagues to embrace new skills. Findings in Wales were backed by a UK-

wide survey which found that high-performing organisations spent an average 36 per cent more on management and leadership development per manager per year than low performing ones. In Wales, businesses can receive a range of

funding to support leadership and management development. It is available through a Welsh Government programme called Enhanced Leadership and Management Skills, part-funded by the European Social Fund, and it aims to support growth in the Welsh economy. Information about funding is available from the LMW website www.lmw.org.uk

Case study: JoJo Maman Bèbè

One organisation which has remained committed to delivering leadership and management training to staff to support the continued growth and success of the business is Newport-based maternity and baby clothing company JoJo Maman Bèbè. The retailer has reaped the rewards of

ensuring the growth of its managers and their ability to lead. Investment in training and development has resulted in a noticeable increase in confi dence among managers and a greater understanding of the business. This has in turn led to a positive impact on

the fi nancial performance of the organisation, increased staff retention levels, improved team engagement and reduced sickness absence. Karen Fry, operations director at

JoJo Maman Bèbè, said: “Management development is immensely important and drives our business. Training is also in the very fabric of our company’s ethos; I think that without it, the business wouldn’t be where it is today. “What I love about putting people through

development programmes is that they start to challenge the senior management, which I think is really important because we do not always have the right answers.” Leadership & Management Wales is a

Welsh Government-backed organisation that promotes the development of leaders and managers in Wales. It is part-funded by the European Social Fund.
