A.J. Quist Young Breeder of the Year Memorial Award Natalie Silva

As Presented by Steve Maddox

Natalie Silva of Tra- cy, California is the 2012 recipient of the A.J. Quist Memorial Young Breeder of the Year Award.

Nata-

lie received her first Holstein on the day she was born, a gift from her proud fa- ther. Tat heifer was

the foundation to her herd, which started her now 25 head of Holsteins. Natalie’s first purchased animal, C Venneth Top Gun Chanel was bought in 1994.

Natalie and her husband Robert along with their three young sons, currently milk 25 registered Holsteins, and 200 commer- cial Holstein cows. Teir goal is to eventually milk 250 to 300 registered Holsteins. Currently, their RHA on 243 cows is 20,950 pounds of milk with 3.52 percent fat and 3.21 percent protein. To help maintain her understanding on the dairy industry today, Natalie is a member of several organizations including the San Joaquin DHIA, DFA, Dairy Farmers of America Young Cooperator, California Farm Bureau, and the California Dairy Campaign.

Natalie has been affiliated with the dairy industry since the day she was born, and has been recognized many times for her hard work and dedication. Natalie started her involvement with 4-H from 1990 to 1995. She then join the FFA, where she was awarded Chapter Farmer, received her State Farmer Degree, and was a 1999 National FFA Dairy Proficiency winner. Nata- lie has participated in many shows across the state, some of her best highlights include being the 1994 California State Hol-

stein show Grand Champion winner in the junior division and in 1995 having the Grand Champion cow at the World Dairy Expo.

From 2000 to 2001 Natalie volunteered her time and

know of the dairy industry by serving as District 5 Dairy Prin- cess. Natalie graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2002 with a double major of dairy science and agriculture business. At Cal Poly Natalie was a member of the Los Lecheros club, the dairy challenge team, and the dairy cattle judging team.

Aside from being involved with the dairy industry, Natalie is a dedicated member of her community. She is a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Tracy. She also was a mem- ber of Irmandade Portuguese Festa do Espirito Santo of Tracy where she and her husband Robert were President from 2009 to 2010. As president, they volunteered their time to the com- munity by hosting dinners and organizing the Festa, where they had the parade, mass, and fed the poor in their community. Natalie is also a member of PFSA.

When asked her opinion on why she believes Registered Hol- steins have a future in her dairy program and in the future of dairy, she responded, “ My love and passion for the Registered Holstein Cow stems from the Maternal side of my pedigree. My Mom, Carol Morasci Borba is actually the reason why my parents became involved in the Purebred industry. Without my Mom’s background in breeding and showing registered Hol- steins I would not be walking in the shoes I walk today.

It has

been that passion to breed elite Holsteins that drives my future not only in the registered Holstein business, but also the dairy industry in general. I feel that in today’s world of dairying, reg- istered Holsteins play a bigger role than ever. With depressed milk prices and inflated feed costs dairy farmers are relying on the value of marketability to help make their living. Te regis- tered Holstein is a ‘value added product’ that allows us a niche market for merchandising cattle and increasing our herd value.”
