“We’re swinging it and we have some guys who are bringing it on the mound.” Boxwell, who has signed a scholarship to play next season at Southeast Missouri State, making him the first Division I baseball recruit in Verrado history, is one of two catchers on the Arizona roster. He said he is excited to represent his state in such a prestigious tournament. “I feel honored and really excited to play in the Heartland Classic,” Boxwell said. “I watched the guys go last year and I was looking forward to going this year.” “Boxwell will be really good for us behind the plate,” Acosta said. “He also gives us another left-handed bat.” Boxwell was a two-way standout as a senior for the Vipers, swinging a potent bat and playing superb defense. He batted .494 with two home runs, a team-leading 43 RBI and 39 runs scored. Boxwell also hit 12 doubles, second on
the team, and three triples. Defensively, Boxwell thwarted eight of 14 (57.1 percent) base-stealing attempts. Rincon, who has signed to play at
Paradise Valley Community College, was the Tigers’ ace, compiling a 7-1 record with a 2.50 earned run average, both team- leading figures. He allowed 39 hits in 61 2/3 innings, striking out 71 and walking 31.
“Rincon had a great year on the mound for Millennium,” Acosta said. “He’s a real bulldog. He throws strikes and had good command. We expect him to eat a lot of innings for us. We need it because we play eight games in five days.” Acosta and his coaching staff worked diligently to put together the best roster possible.
“When recruiting players, we go out and talk with the junior college coaches and major league scouts to see who is on their radar,” Acosta said. “We also seek recommendations of high school coaches.”
