efficiency of its buildings. The cost of healthcare is something that is continually in the newspapers at the moment, and the support provided by Trust Housing depends on very tight margins. A solution that provides energy savings and reduces lighting bills means the organisation will be able to reinvest savings into creating a better environment for their residents. Research found that lighting in communal areas such as corridors would be left on throughout the day so that the space was always safely lit. This was causing major lighting inefficiencies, so it was decided that action should be taken with the help of Steinel UK. “Intelligent, sensor-controlled lighting seemed like the obvious solution to the energy-inefficiency of lighting the corridors round the clock,” comments Gary Cusick, Facilities Officer at Trust Housing Association. “However, we needed sophisticated technology, so that we could be completely sure that the lights would switch on automatically when a person entered the corridor, and then stay on for only as long as they were needed. Steinel’s RS PRO 1000 sensor lights are clearly at the cutting edge of technology and they met our needs perfectly.” Jiles Lighting of Derby is distributing a brand new energy saving product from Hyperion Lighting. This exciting new product offers a retrofit opportunity for fluorescent lighting with occupancy

“We view light and lightings not merely as a technology-driven product, but as an element that is just as important to human health as fresh air and clean water. That is why we feed the knowledge acquired from research into health and therapy-related issues into our product development cycle.” - Zumtobel Group CEO Dr. Harald Sommerer

detection in hospitals. The low energy, 40,000 hour dimmable HT8 requires no additional external wiring. This means that the solution can be completed as a simple retrofit for both T8 and T12 fittings. The HT8 can reduce the lighting to a

predetermined level of between 13w and 33w for a 5ft tube when the area has not been occupied for a number minutes. Resulting savings can be up to 82%. Lighting returns to full power once movement is detected, and further timer options are also available. Jiles Lighting sees this as an excellent opportunity for the NHS to reduce costs through energy efficiency whilst using a simple cost effective retrofit option.
