A message from Bovey Tracey’s Town Mayor, Councillor Anna Klinkenberg

I

T is a privilege to write a message for this Bovey Tracey Guide for 2012. This year will be a momentous year as we shall be commemorating Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee nationally and locally we have plans for the celebrations in the town, among which there will be street party on Sunday, June 3, commemorative certificates for all the children attending Bovey Tracey Primary School and St Catherine’s School and a civic service church service on Monday, June 4 at 4pm. Following the jubilee celebrations we then have the Olympic Games; while these are being held in London, many local children, some of whom may have an opportunity to attend the games, will, I hope, be inspired to achieve their own personal best in their chosen sport or even think about taking up a new sport. We are lucky in Bovey Tracey to have so many sporting and recreational facilities, cricket, football, tennis, swimming, bowls, cycling, walking all within the town. All the facilities are not just there for residents but for surrounding villages and visitors, and all are made very welcome.

Having been a town councillor for several years I have seen many changes and know first-hand the amount of work and money invested in the parish by the town council. The town council has completed the Bovey Tracey Masterplan for the next few years in conjunction with the County and District Council, police, primary school and other organisations within the town which will feed into Teignbridge District Council’s Core Strategy Planning Document for the next 20 years.

Inevitably there will be further developments in the coming years within the town, but the council will play its part in helping to maintain the natural and built environment residents

know and love and visitors come to see and enjoy. Visitors come to Bovey Tracey for a variety of reasons and the Bovey Tracey Business Association is keen to keep the town vibrant with welcoming shops and businesses serving residents and visitors alike with competitive prices and a variety of goods and services available. Many visitors choose to come back to Bovey Tracey year after year, staying in favourite hotels and bed and breakfast establishments and make the most of facilities, walks and shops. Some visitors enjoy Bovey Tracey so much they decide to move here! The information centre, sited in the lower car park, is the first port of call for many visitors, manned by volunteers, to provide an excellent service to answer – where is it?, how do I get there?, is there a...?, what’s on locally? and many other questions!

Many of the questions will be answered with the completion of the Bovey Tracey Heritage Trail with map and directions to all the places of interest in the town including the Heritage Centre housing many artefacts and information on the history of Bovey Tracey. Events take place in Bovey Tracey during the year that attracts many visitors; the three-day Contemporary Craft Fair, French Market, Historic Vehicle Rally are now established in the calendar as well as the Horticultural Show and Carnival along with various fetes.
