Yarner Wood

60 years of nature

conservation at Yarner Wood

NOW part of East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve, Yarner Wood can be found just off the Bovey Tracey to Manaton Road. Although it has a small car park (now with new pond hide) it can be easily accessed from the car parks on Trendlebere Down. It is a place for everyone to enjoy a special woodland through the nature trails, bird hides and a new Woodland Centre (a facility that can be hired by the community for environmental activities and exploration). Things were different 60 years ago. In 1952 Nature Conservancy brought the wood for experimental research and people were only allowed in with a permit. This research has been added to throughout the reserve’s history including weather statistics, birdbox monitoring records (in particular, those of the pied flycatchers) and studies of the trees themselves.

Most of the management over time has been subtle with the aim of conserving an

internationally important piece of woodland by controlling invasive species and thinning creating a monoculture of trees and allowing nature to take its course.
