The Heritage Trust was formed in 1995 with the aim of preserving and communicating the rich and varied history of Bovey Tracey. While the story of the railway provides a fascinating insight into the growth and prosperity of the town, it is only part of the story. The Heritage Centre is a mine of information about all aspects of the town’s history from the granting of a Royal Charter in 1260 to the Charter celebrations in 2010.
There are artefacts and photographs illustrating the growth and decline of the pottery industry, the granite tramway, local mining enterprises, agriculture and Bovey Tracey’s involvement in the Civil War in 1646. Visitors travel from all over the world to consult the family archives and to find out more about where their ancestors lived and worked. The clues are in the street names: Station Road, Pottery Road, Monks Way, Battle Road, the whole area is steeped in history and Bovey Tracey is a town very much aware of its heritage. The motto on the Town Coat of Arms, says it all: Spiritu respice fiducia prospice, which means ‘Look back with pride, look forward with confidence.’ Check at the tourist information centre for Heritage Centre opening times and to get directions. The old station is tucked away behind the housing in St John’s Lane but there is a free car park, admission is free and you will receive a warm welcome from the Heritage Trust volunteers.
