Bovey Tracey Primary School
THE highlight of last year was the celebration of the School’s Centenary, 1911 – 2011. A host of events took place throughout the summer to mark this very special occasion and we were delighted that the wider community were able to join us for some of our celebrations. There was a full house at the Centenary Quiz in
May, with 15 teams answering a barrage of questions, many of them linked to the history of Bovey Tracey.
A large mosaic, designed and created by the children, was unveiled by Max Quick, a former headteacher of Bovey School. Our school crest, created from a montage of photographs taken around the school, now adorns a wall in the hall. Both are a delightful and a charming reflection of the children’s commemoration of their education in our community. A ‘Centenary Showcase’ of music, dance and drama, charting events through the century, involved 70 children and delighted packed audiences. Many past members of staff and friends of the school joined us for the final performance and all of the guests signed a special visitor’s book.
Members of the local community were invited to
share their reminiscences during tours of the school, which included opportunities to view displays of photographs and artefacts from the previous 100 years. A sports event for the children, followed by a ceilidh and barbecue on the school field, proved a fitting grand finale to the celebrations, although the children have since enjoyed a disco, a theatre production and a storytelling workshop, funded by money raised during the events. Finally, a commemorative tree has been planted in Mill Marsh Park; a reminder of the past and symbolic of the future of education in our community.
