LONDON 2012 – FACT SHEET

he London Olympic Games are a first in many areas from raw statistics to changes in events to make them more television friendly. But perhaps


the more impressive aspect to the 2012 Games is the site of Olympic Park, and the venues created inside.


The following are some key statistics and facts regarding the 30th Summer Games, and the third for the City of London.


OLYMPIC STADIUM


• The Olympic Stadium will have a capacity of 80,000 during the Games


• It is the lightest Olympic stadium ever built • The fourteen lighting towers are needed because this the first Olympic Games with HD TV freeze-frame coverage that will be essential to capture the action


• Part of the supporting structure of the roof is formed from 2,500 tonnes of steel tubing that was actually recycled from old gas pipelines


AQUATICS CENTRE


• The steel used to build the Aquatics centre came from Newport in Wales


• The wave shaped roof on the Aquatics Centre measured 12,000 square metres which is one and a half times bigger than Wembley football pitch


• The amount of material that had to be excavated to build the Aquatics centre was the equivalent of 160,000 tonnes of soil


OLYMPIC PARK


Described by many as a blight on London, a repository of sinister and dangerous pollutants going back to its time as a huge industrial site back in the 19th century. The work on Olympic Park to produce the main stadium and other venues was the biggest ever in Europe.


During construction numerous historical artefacts were found such as Roman coins, a 19th century wooden boat, and a hut from the Bronze Age.


VELODROME


• The Velodrome is one of the most sustainable venues in the Olympic Park. The lightweight roof weighed roughly half that of any other covered Velodrome, helping create a highly-efficient building


• The Velodrome ‘Cable – net’ roof is made from 17 km of steel cables. That’s over 10 miles of steel cable, twice the height of Mount Everest


• The designers and builders of the London 2012 Velodrome are aiming for it to be the fastest indoor cycling track in the world


OLYMPIC TORCH


• One of the highlights of any Olympics is the Torch Run. • Lit on 18 May at Mt. Olympia • Carried throughout the United Kingdom over 70 days • Passed within a few miles of every city and village in the country


• Carried by 8,000 torch bearers from all over the world

INTERNATIONAL BROADCAST CENTRE/MAIN PRESS CENTRE


• The International Broadcast Centre will be a 24 hour media hub for around 20,000 broadcasters, photographers and journalists who will bring the Games to an estimated four billion people worldwide


• It is the size of six full size football pitches • The biggest fork lift truck in the country was used during the erection of the steel frame


ABU OLYMPICS COVERAGE PACKAGE


The ABU is the IOC’s broadcast partner in London and will provide: • 3,000 hours on 11 channels to its pool of members • 10 technical, commentary and production staff to support Olympic Broadcast Services


• Six full-time program streams • Two unilateral channels • An Olympics News and Highlights package (full time) • A Broadcast Data Stream (full time, in real time)
