The Festival is a result of a very successful collaboration between the ABU, ABC Radio Australia and KBS which will culminate in a gala performance by he finalists at the ABU General Assembly in Seoul, Korea.

Organisers have been working hard to ensure the gala event will be a memorable one and they are thrilled with progress to date:

“I’m delighted at the progress we’ve made in developing the Inaugural ABU Radio Song Festival. The spirit and essence of partnership and collaboration from participating ABU members has been extraordinarily positive and something that I feel privileged to be a part of”, commented Mike McCluskey, CEO ABC Radio Australia.

“It’s a challenge, at the best of times, to co-ordinate the efforts and expectations of people within your own organisation, so to be a part of a high-level functioning group that is dispersed all over Asia and the Pacific is really something that is quite remarkable. Our focus has been to structure the ABU Radio Song Festival to be of benefit to our respective audiences, the participating artists and ourselves as participating members, so although there is still a way to go before the finish line, to have collectively reached this point together is already a unique achievement”, added Mark Hemetsberger, Head of Marketing & Communications, ABC Radio Australia.

In the spirit of collaboration and cultural exchange, accepted musical entries will be uploaded to a dedicated ABU Radio Song Festival website for all participating ABU members to direct their respective local audiences to.

To be eligible, entries must be original compositions (musical score and lyrics), composed of any musical genre

and ‘type’ of music and be played on any instrument, composed and sung in any language.

Importantly, entrants must be unsigned, unpublished, amateur musicians. Organisers say they define amateur as anyone who has not at any point had a professional recording contract for the sale of their musical works. This does not exclude self- published artists and a full description of the terms and conditions of entries are available from the ABU.

ABU Radio Song Festival Coordinator Ms Vijay Sadhu says the competition and gala performances will be delayed broadcast by participating members and the whole festival aims to showcase and recognise the diverse, undiscovered musical talents of nations within Asia and the Pacific regions.

“By doing so, the festival will foster understanding, awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity that exists across the region,” she said. “The ABU Radio Song Festival will showcase some of the best of the best unsigned local talent to an International audience by reflecting contemporary Asian and Pacific society as well as

celebrating music and artistic diversity across borders.”

Although details are still being finalised, it is proposed that the gala finals in Korea will be a maximum of two hours with up to 15 finalist performances. The gala finals will be co-hosted in both English and Korean, with a single winner chosen based on outstanding performance, and with second and third prizes also awarded.

According to the Director of International Relations Department at KBS Kenny Kihyung Bae, KBS is sparing no effort to ensure a successful event: “KBS is excited to host some of the brightest up-and-coming talents in Asia Pacific region at the inaugural ABU Radio Song Festival. We pledge our sincerest efforts to make this fresh and challenging event a success that ABU member organisations can look to as an example for years to come.”

As host broadcaster, Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) will record the show for radio and make it available to all ABU members, with rights given to participating organisations to airthe event. Plans are also being made for live video streaming.
