Day 2 Session Highlight: Engaging Audiences on Four Screens

Broadcasters have been urged to step up their efforts to make content for a rapidly growing number of delivery platforms.

Attendees at the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium in Kuala Lumpur were told there has been a rapid transition from traditional platforms to more versatile multimedia platforms such as Hybrid TV, multimedia content over broadband, Smart Applications as well as the use of cloud technology. Telecommunications companies are moving fast to get a foothold in the market stimulated with content made available anytime, anywhere on any device. Here is what’s coming to a device near you:

WebDMB – introduced and piloted in South Korea, is a mobile TV hybrid platform based on Terrestrial DMB and

the Internet. WebDMB offers a similar experience to the users but through a hybrid smart application programming interface (API).

Hybridcast TV – integrates broadband services with digital broadcasting to provide a seamless, harmonised experience. Key features are the APIs for broadcast resource access that enable information retrieval on the current program and for stream synchronisation.

Over-the-top (OTT) content means online delivery of video and audio without the ISP being involved in the control or distribution of the content itself. This is an open platform and is available on many connected devices including TV sets.

Digital Radio Plus in Australia provides additional value-added services like

electronic program guides (EPGs), slide shows, ability to pause and rewind and a wider choice of content. A new system has been developed to provide more interactivity through integration with mobile networks.

Establishing multiplatform and multi-screen delivery systems need thought on many critical areas such as subscriber rights management over multiple networks, addressing the range of device types and formats, harmonising stream management, adaptive rate control and rights management for different devices. Another key area in such a deployment is security and protection of content rights. The symposium was told that managing a multiple rights framework with many different scramblers and encoders is possible and is in operation today.

decide upon implementation of digital infrastructure and services.

Earlier in the symposium, ABU Secretary-General Dr Javad Mottaghi had welcomed participants, the Ministerial Address was delivered by the Hon Y. B. Dato’ Joseph Salang, Deputy Minister of Information, Communications and Culture in Malaysia and a Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Doan Viet Trung, Vice-President of the Voice of Vietnam.

Altogether there were 20 workshops, web seminars and tutorials over the four days at the Hotel Istana ranging from the deeply technical through to discussions on workflows and media management.

The symposium’s first session “Systems Standards: New Features and their Evaluation” revealed that the present digital system standards used in industry were evolving with enhancements being added as a result of on-going research and development. New standards had also emerged, in tandem with advances in IC chip architecture and progress in the various fields of broadcast, communication, computer and information technology
