Arts Summer dancing at CCA Writers learn about ‘Criminal Minds’


Various dance programs join the line-up at the Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave. in downtown Chandler this summer. The Tempe Dance West Recital holds


“Dancin’ in the Streets” at 4 p.m. Sun., June 10, its third annual recital featuring the entire academy of more than 175 dancers. Tickets are $10, $14 and $16. Marilyn Bostic’s Ballet Centre holds a


production with dancers age 3 through adult performing classical ballet, tap, modern, hip hop jazz, Broadway dances and lyrical jazz. The show is 1 ½ hour in length with no intermission. The company has been in Tempe for 38 years. In addition, the Tempe Dance Academy offers


two recitals: Dancing Through the Years: Talent Factory Dance Recital at 2 and 7 p.m. Sat., June 16. According to the Chandler Center for the Arts, the Tempe Dance Academy has achieved “an excellent reputation in the dance world” because of their emphasis on excellence in dance education and the dedication of the teaching faculty. WriteNow! 2012 Conference, “CRIMINAL MINDS: Investigating Today’s Writing Scene” to be held from Sat., Aug. 11 at Millennium Scottsdale Resort & Villas, 7401 N. Scottsdale Rd. in Scottsdale. Speakers include licensed psychotherapist and author Dennis Palumbo; publicity guru Dana Kaye; multi-award- winning author Sean Chercover and more, according to Desert Sleuths’ conference chair, Roni Olson. In addition, acquisitions editor for the Maine-based Five Star Publishing, Denise Dietz, will be accepting 15-minute pitches. Palumbo, whose Los Angeles private practice specializes


in creative issues, is also a mystery writer, and his newest crime novel, “Fever Dream,” is now available, published by Poisoned Pen Press. His first Rinaldi mystery, “Mirror Image,” was published in 2010. A former screenwriter with credits that include the feature film “My Favorite Year” and ABC-TV’s “Welcome Back, Kotter,” Palumbo also writes for “Psychology Today” among others. Chercover is the author of the novels “Big City Bad


Blood,” “Trigger City” and “The Trinity Game,” as well as short stories that have appeared in a number of anthologies. His work has received the Anthony, Shamus, CWA Dagger, Dilys, Crimespree, Gumshoe and Lovey awards, and has been shortlisted for Edgar, MacAvity, Barry, ITW Thriller and Arthur Ellis.


Writers can learn more about publicizing their books from Kaye, who received her B.A. in Fiction Writing from Columbia College Chicago and worked as a freelance writer and book critic. Her work has appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times, Time Out Chicago, Crimespree Magazine, Windy City Times, and on GapersBlock.com. Her publicity career includes creating media campaigns. Dietz, also a senior editor for Five Star, which is an imprint of Gale, part of Cengage Learning, will hear a limited number of story pitches from attendees for $15 on a first-come, first-served basis. Conference fees, which includes continental breakfast,


plated lunch and afternoon snack, is $80 for Desert Sleuths’ members before July 11, and $85 from July 12 to Aug. 11; for nonmembers, the advance price is $90, and $95 after July 12 and at the door. There will also be a silent auction fundraiser for the


nonprofit Desert Sleuths, the Arizona chapter of Sisters in Crime, a nationwide organization that exists “to combat discrimination against women in the mystery field, to educate publishers and the general public as to the inequalities in the treatment of female authors, and to raise the level of awareness of their contribution to the field.” Author Deborah J. Ledford is president of Desert Sleuths, which meets monthly on the third Wednesday in Scottsdale, offering guest speakers and other writing information for members.
