Spiritual Reflections Finding God in unexpected places

BY LYNNE HARTKE God likes to hide in plain sight. Especially in small things. He’s there in the intricacy of spiders’

webs. In the blooming saguaro cactus whose flowers last only 24 hours. In the lone cry of a wolf. God hides there. In plain sight. One time, God hid a feast inside some fish and bread (see Mark 8). A large gathering of people had followed Jesus outside of town and had listened to him speak for three days. Whatever food they brought was gone and everyone was hungry. Jesus decided to feed them, but there was no McDonald’s handy. No Taco Bell. No Subway. “How many loaves of bread are

there?” Jesus asked. “Seven.” The disciples also found a few small fish. The storyteller wanted the readers to know that nobody had a swordfish or a shark stashed in their lunch box. No. The fish were small. But inside that bread and fish, God had hidden a banquet. The disciples didn’t see it. The crowd

didn’t see it. But Jesus did. Jesus had hung out with his father enough to know his dad liked to wrap himself in the ordinary. That day, 4,000 people ate until they were satisfied. Recently, God hid inside a Tootsie

Roll. It’s true. Since having radiation for melanoma on his jawline, my dad has not been able to taste any food — until he picked up the chewy candy, twisted off the brown and white paper and unwrapped a miracle. My dad could taste the

sweet chocolate. Inside the wrapper a little happiness

was waiting to be found. In the chewy goodness, God was hiding. Waiting. As much as God likes hiding in the

ordinary, there is one thing he likes even more — God likes being found. In fish and bread. And in a Tootsie Roll. Lynne Hartke is the wife of Pastor Kevin

Hartke of Trinity Christian Fellowship in Chandler, 50 S. McQueen Rd. For information, visit www.tcfchandler.org or call 480-963-7698.
