Community See documentary film series at library

Documentaries on topics ranging from Johnny Cash to 1960s urban blacks to competing pastry chefs will be shown free at the downtown Chandler Public Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays through July 31.

The 10-film Get Reel series is made

possible by a partnership between Chandler Public Library and “POV,” or Point of View, public television’s premier documentary series.

The documentaries will be screened in

the Cooper Room at the Chandler Public Library at 22 S. Delaware St., on June 5, June 12, June 19, June 26, July 3, July 10, July 17, July 24 and July 31. “Showing documentaries from public

television’s ‘POV’ seems to be a natural fit for the public library,” says Chandler Librarian Ted Liebler. “We hope to present a wide spectrum of the human experience from a 21st century global perspective while selecting films that correspond to national and local events.” Produced by American Documentary Inc. and beginning its 25th season on PBS in 2012, the award-winning “POV” is the longest-running showcase on American television to feature the work of today’s best independent documentary filmmakers. “POV” has brought more than 325 acclaimed documentaries to millions nationwide and has a Webby Award-winning online series, “POV’s Borders.”

Since 1988, POV has pioneered the

art of presentation and outreach using independent nonfiction media to build new communities in conversation about today’s most pressing social issues. For more information, visit www.pbs.org/pov.

Documentary series schedule Here is the schedule and descriptions

for the Get Reel Documentary Series at Chandler Public Library: June 5, “Calavera Highway.” A sweeping

story of seven Mexican-American men grappling with the meaning of masculinity, fatherhood and a legacy of rootless beginnings. 90 minutes June 12, “Johnny Cash: The Man,

His World, His Music.” In this classic 1969 documentary, the Man in Black is captured at his peak, the first of many in a looming roller coaster career. Fresh on the heels of his Folsom Prison album, Cash reveals the dark intensity and raw talent that made him a country music star and cultural icon. 90 minutes June 19, “Revolution ’67.” An illuminating account of events too often relegated to footnotes in U.S. history — the black urban rebellions of the 1960s. 90 minutes June 26, “Up Heartbreak Hill.” The

film follows two Native American teens torn between the lure of opportunities outside their remote Navajo reservation community and the cultural ties that

bind them to home. 60 minutes July 3, “The Way We Get By.” Over the past five years, a group of senior citizens has made history by greeting over 900,000 American troops at a tiny airport in Bangor, Maine. 90 minutes July 10, “The Kings of Pastry.” Pastry chefs whip up the most gravity-defying concoctions and edge-of-your-seat drama as they deliver their desserts for the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition. 90 minutes July 17, “The City Dark.” Is darkness

becoming extinct? Exploring the physical and psychological effects of light pollution, The City Dark is a portrait of the world after dusk, and a meditation on the human relationship to the stars. 60 minutes July 24, “Last Train Home.” Every spring, China’s cities are plunged into chaos as 130 million migrant workers journey to their home villages for the New Year in the world’s largest human migration. 90 minutes July 31, “The Principal.” Over the

course of a school year, two public school principals with unique styles and similar passions make a difference in the lives of their students. 60 minutes The schedule is also online at www. chandlerlibrary.org/go2/get-reel.cfm.
