WEYANT’S OPINION — The Hill Letters

against assets with no intent to repay; they liquidate inventory and other assets of the business. They then stage a calamity such as a fi re. After this they collect insurance proceeds. Any credi- tors or suppliers are stiffed what they are owed. This is called “busting out the joint”. This was actually illustrated in the televi- sion series “The Sopranos”. This is a fraudulent practice but it is the mob doing it. However, with fi nancial deregulation, this has become legal on a much grander scale — Private Equity Firms Private Equity fi rm Bain Capi- tal with Mitt Romney as a man- aging partner, bought a company that manufactured paper products such as note pads called Ameri- can Pad & Paper Co. (AMPAD) for $5 million. During their rein Bain charged over $7 million in management fees and $45 to $50 fees on another acquisition by AMPAD. They infl ated assets; borrowed heavily raising the debt from $11 million to $400 million in six years. They raided the pen- sion fund and fi red all workers & fi led bankruptcy. Bain reaped a return of over $100 million net on an investment of $5 million. Like the mob, they “Busted out the Joint”. Romney calls this job creation. If the Ryan plan is scrutinized enough, this is the exact same strategy however now it’s being used to bust out the United States of America.

‘Heroes’ story

appreciated Editor: Kudos to your staff writers for the excellent article “Heroes Remembered”!! We needed to learn about or be reminded of the people behind the names of streets, buildings, etc. that we see daily in the West Valley and some we don’t. The profi les were brief and yet held important information about each honoree. Thank you for reminding us. Monday we were touched and enriched by a trip to Arizona’s National Cemetery. It was an impressive sight. Thousands of

small fl ags blowing in the wind adorning the graves and thou- sands of people there to honor the veterans. We often hear that no one cares anymore — that is NOT the case, as evidenced by those visiting that sacred place. People of all ages — not just the elderly — but families with small children were there to show respect. It was an honor for us to share Memorial Day there and we would suggest that others put it on their calendars for next year, to make it a point to spend a part of their day at the National Cemetery.

article. Again, thanks for the ‘Heroes’

Correction for

‘Heroes’ story Editor: I just fi nished reading the May 25th edition on the West Valley View, I thought the article entitled “Heroes Remembered” was outstanding and at a very appropriate time. There was one point that needs clarifi ed, this was in the part about Major Troy Gilbert, the writer stated that Major Gilbert was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and is awarded to Offi cers. That statement is incorrect, this award is not only given to Offi cers but also to Enlisted personnel for (Heroism or Extraordinary Achievement While Participating in Aerial Flight).

I received 2 DFCs as a helicopter crewmember during Vietnam. I know many other enlisted personnel that have also received this award in the numerous con- fl icts since that time.

to make a clarifi cation of this award.

Thank you for the opportunity

EDITOR’S RESPONSE: Thank you for the compliment as well as the correction. As Master Sgt. Peterson correctly pointed out in his letter and proved through his own service to our country, enlisted personnel are entitled to the same medals as offi cers. We apologize for the error.

Racial profi ling

is not acceptable Editor: Mr. and Mrs. Perry like you

I can personally attest to this as

I’m very much against anyone being in our country illegally however I abhor racial profi l- ing. No human being should be profi led due to his or her race. What Sheriff Joe and his misguided minions have done is to declare that ANYONE of Hispanic descent is illegal unless they prove otherwise. The Federal Government is suing Joe due to his inability to treat

profi led Mr. Perry. I could profi le you as a far right Republican, white, drive a Buick and be over

US citizens of Hispanic descent AND anyone suspected of being in this Country illegally with the respect and dignity that you yourself would demand. For almost twenty years Joe has run roughshod over the rights of the citizens of Maricopa County and its high time someone called him on it. Too bad it had to be the Feds and NOT the citi- zens of Maricopa County. You do realize his behavior as an elected offi cial refl ects on us all. Anyone and everyone can be

60 years of age for thinking Joe does a good job but I won’t because that would be wrong. The next time you look in the mirror pretend you were Mexican and wonder aloud what you would do if you were a citizen of these United States and got stopped. Unfortunately you left your ID at home, how are you going to prove your not illegal? That’s the same dilemma many in this state face everyday because of nothing more than the color of there skin. Is it still OK? I think not.
