Pitcher Ryan Erazo and shortstop Matt Frank were selected to play for the South, which will be coached by Estrella head coach Pat McCubbins. Cody Swindel, an outfielder and pitcher for Buckeye, will also play. The game starts at 7 p.m. at Surprise Stadium. “They’re both very, very deserving,” McCubbins said of his players being selected. “Those are two kids that — Raz [Erazo] has started for us for four years, Matt Frank has been a part of our varsity program for four years and started for three years — and they’ve really been kind of the anchor of who we are. They both hit over .400 their senior year and were arguably two of our bigger leaders.” Erazo was the pitching staff’s ace, going 11-2 with a 2.22 earned run average and 114 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings. He threw eight complete games, including a five-inning no-hitter. At the plate he was equally impressive, batting a team-leading .465 with eight doubles, a triple and 28 RBI, which was second on the team. “It’s a huge honor to be on the all-star team because I’ve seen my friends go the last three years and it’s an awesome feeling to be a part of it,” Erazo said. Erazo expects a low-scoring affair. “I think there are a lot of good pitchers out here, especially for our team,” he said. “I’m expecting to have a lot of fun with these guys.”
“Matt did a tremendous job for us in the leadoff spot, setting the table game by game,” McCubbins said. “I think that was really evident in the semifinal game when he doubled to lead off against Fountain Hills.”

but said it wasn’t a goal of his during the regular season. “It’s pretty awesome ’cause there’s only a few kids that actually get to do that and have a chance to play,” Frank said. “You just try your hardest and if you get
Frank is excited to play in the game,
selected you get selected, but I wasn’t worried about it during the season.” In addition to Frank’s good offensive numbers, he was also a valuable pitcher for the Wolves. Frank went 3-1 in seven appearances, compiling a 2.62 ERA. He struck out 30 in 32 innings pitched. “I don’t think most people realize how good of a pitcher he is,” McCubbins said. “We really felt like we had four to five kids that would have been a No. 1 on a lot of the teams we played. Matt had just over a 2 ERA in more than 30 innings pitched. If we get into a situation Saturday night where we need somebody to throw, we wouldn’t hesitate to throw him.”
Coaching For McCubbins, it’s a special honor for him to coach the game, he said. He’s also been the game’s director for the last five years.
Frank batted .413 and was second on the team in hits with 38, and led the team with 34 runs scored. He had four doubles, three triples and drove in 12.
“I think this one will be more fun just because our kids have done so well the last couple years, have made such a deep run in state,” McCubbins said. Adding to the allure of the experience for McCubbins is the coach in the opposing dugout. McCubbins will coach against Mohave Valley River Valley’s Aaron LaCasse. River Valley beat Estrella in the state championship game, 8-7. McCubbins insists there will be no revenge seeking. “None, not at all,” he said. “We’ve been friends for the whole eight years I’ve been here. He and I were both assistants at the same time coaching against each other, so I got an opportunity to know him then and we’re good friends.”
Swindel batted .302 for Buckeye and had an on-base percentage of .406. Of his 26 hits, seven were doubles, which led the team, and he added two homers, driving in 12. He also scored 16 runs, which tied for third on the club.
On the mound, Swindel compiled a 4.79 ERA, going 1-1 in seven appearances. He allowed just 12 hits in 19 innings, striking out 10.
Swindel finished the season with a flourish, going 4 for 4 with three runs and three RBI as Buckeye beat Tonopah Valley, 14-0. He was also the winning pitcher that day, throwing five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out eight.
