One Year Ago, June 2011: A large community event dubbed a “School- A-Palooza” was held on June 17 in the Old York School parking lot to celebrate 61 years of serving the students of Branchburg. The school was closed as district enrollments declined.

Five Years Ago, June 2007: On Fathers’ Day, an adult black bear that had earlier been reported roaming the area between routes 22 and 28 in Bridgewater, crossed the river and made an appearance in North Branch Village, crossing Station Road and bounding into the woods.

10 Years Ago, June 2002: After years of controversy, eight new ball- field light poles were installed at White Oak Park to allow more games without building more fields. The $114,500 total cost was covered by Branchburg Baseball Club fundraising.

25 Years Ago, June 1987: A proposal to widen Stony Brook Road, creat- ing shoulders and cutting down trees was deemed dead by the township committee after residents brought up concerns that the improvements would increase speeds on the road and reduce safety for kids.

50 Years Ago, June 1962: Dr. Richard Schlatter of Neshanic Station, a history professor at Rutgers and executive director of the university’s Research Council, was appointed vice president and provost, second in command to Rutgers president Mason Gross.

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office, and asked them to disperse. “But why,” they asked, as they moved off. “Because,” he said. “I can’t stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer.”

Mree, aka Marie Hsiao

Mree, an indie folk singer/ songwriter from Branchburg, will graduate from Somerville High School this month, but already has the magic word “Grammy” connected to her name. She was featured as a “Rising Star” by the Grammy Foundation at Grammy Career Day in NYC in February, and was presented to a panel of top music industry professionals. Also, Grammy Award winning artist Bon Iver shared one of her music videos with his fans and followers. Here are some other recent Mree highlights: She is now signed to an exclusive management agree- ment with Music City East, LLC. She was nominated for five Jersey Acoustic Music (JAM) Awards in Asbury Park and won Best Song for “Grow” from her debut album of the same name. Mree has also been accepted into the very com- petitive and prestigious Clive Da- vis Institute of Recorded Music, Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where she’ll be at- tending in the fall. – info submitted by Mark Conk- lin of Music City East, LLC
