The Rotary Club of Branch- burg hosted its 18th annual “Best of Branchburg” Awards recep- tion at Raritan Valley Community College on May 12. The Best of Branchburg committee, led by Rotarian Doug Bateman, honored organizations and people who help the community face challenges of drug abuse, bullying, drug rehabili- tation and peer pressure.


The organizations honored for their efforts in combating these challenges were the STOP pro- gram coordinated by Miranda DeStefano-Meene, The Municipal Alliance with Abby Rutka, the DARE program with Officer Kate Proscia, and the Professional Ad- visory Committee for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (PACADA) with Sha- ron Lutz and Brenda Pateman. In addition, three local commu- nity members were presented one of the highest honors in Rotary. The Paul Harris Award is named after a man who founded Rotary in 1905. Rotary International is now the world’s largest service organi- zation and lives by the motto “Ser-

Paul Harris Awards were pre- sented to: Robert Bouwman who holds many leadership and volun- teer roles in Branchburg; Helen Van Doren, who is turning 90 this year, has served our communities in a lifetime of volunteerism; and Barbara Schlichting, executive director of Somerset Treatment Services in Somerville, with a 40- year career in the field of addic- tion treatment.

Best of Branchburg was a mem- orable event complete with great food and drink, a silent auction, a 50/50 prize that topped $4500, a presentation of the colors by boy scouts, invocation by Rotarian Rev. Todd Buurstra, and a power- ful performance by the cast mem- bers of STOP (Students Tackling Ordinary Problems), who acted out a creative tale of the sad con- sequences of bullying and intoler- ance.
