water species like small- mouth bass and yellow perch. A beach and play- ground round out the fun. Nearby, below the Lake- port Dam, there’s plenty of access for the angler on foot, with good shoreline access on both sides of the inlet. Cast your line for early season rainbow trout and landlocked salmon, as well as summer small- mouth bass. Several area lakes are

you can enjoy great views – and on some summer evenings, live music from the bandstand. Numerous smaller lakes

also dot the region, offer- ing excellent warm and coldwater fisheries and a chance for a more soli- tary fishing experience. These include Pemigewas- set Lake, a scenic spot where anglers of all abili- ties have a chance to catch six different warmwater fish species. The N.H. Fish and Game cartop access site includes an accessible fishing plat- form that cantilevers out over the lake. You’ll have a great shot at catching warmwater species like largemouth bass, black crappie, yellow perch and pickerel right off the casting platform. Wauk- ewan Lake, in the heart of the Lakes Region, is another destination for anglers. The south end of Waukewan – the entire shoreline next to the railroad – of- fers ample access for anglers. Fishing high- lights include rain- bow trout and many warmwater species. Winnisquam Lake

and Opechee Bay also deserve a men- tion. A long, nar- row glacially formed lake, Winnisquam features rainbow and lake trout, smallmouth bass and white perch. Boaters and

shoreline anglers alike will appreciate Fish and Game’s award-winning accessible boat launch. From the platform, you

can fish early in the sea- son for coldwater fish like salmon and trout; during the summer months, try for largemouth

managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department for landlocked salmon. These include Merrymeeting Lake, New- found Lake, Ossipee Lake, Big and Little Squam Lakes, Lake Winnipe- saukee and Winnisquam Lake. To ensure the future of high-quality landlocked salmon fisheries, anglers must take extra care when r e l eas ing salmon, as the percent- age of hook- wounded fish continues to be a problem. Using rub- ber nets and proper release techniques

(for example, don’t “shake” f ish of f the hook) – and re-

bass and yellow perch.

Opechee Bay is an often-

overlooked waterbody that offers multi-species fishing within walking distance of downtown Laconia. An- glers can catch rainbow trout, as well as warm-

leasing lightly hooked healthy salmon, while choosing to har- vest previously hook-wounded fish – are ways to minimize the negative effects of hook wound- ing, thereby in- c r eas ing the number of tro- phy salmon avail- able in the future. To that end, N.H. Fish and Game is encouraging an- glers to take the Landlocked Salm- on Anglers’ Pledge, a cooperative, vol- unteer ef fort to help sustain quality

landlocked salmon fisher- ies in New Hampshire’s large lakes. Learn more at www.fishnh.com/Fishing/ salmon_anglers_pledge. html.
