COMMUNITY BRIGHTON’S BEST! Out In The City reports on the latest Stonewall Brighton Equality Walk…

The ninth annual Stonewall Brighton Equality Walk hit the seaside city on Bank Holiday Sunday, 6 May. Nearly 600 supporters of the gay equality charity took on the 10k challenge, raising a record-breaking £65,000 for Stonewall’s education work.

Despite a cold and overcast day, walkers joined celebrity hosts Jane Hazlegrove (Casualty), Harry Derbidge (TOWIE), and John and Sally Bercow (Speaker of the House and his wife) at the start line. As Mr Bercow cut the starting line ribbon, he said: “Thank you to Stonewall, who must be regarded as one of the most successful campaigns in British political history.” This year’s Walk was supported by

American Express and Square Peg Media. The Top Team prize went to GLEE from PricewaterhouseCoopers (pictured bottom right), who raised over £10,000 – winning a champagne dinner and tickets to a show at Brighton’s Komedia. Other walkers included the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Anne Meadows, and local MPs Caroline Lucas and Simon Kirby. Stonewall Director of Fundraising Catherine Bosworth said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the chilly weather didn’t dampen people’s spirits. This hugely successful Walk – our biggest ever – will help us continue efforts to stamp out homophobic bullying. It should be a strong reminder that many people support our fight to secure a brighter future for Britain’s lesbian, gay and bisexual young people.” Pascal Guignard, Vice President &

General Manager and Executive Sponsor of the American Express UK Pride network said: “This is the sixth year that American Express has supported the Brighton Equality Walk and we are very proud to be

part of such a successful event. Our support for the annual Equality Walk is part of our on-going commitment to making American Express a more inclusive, supportive and open working environment for all.” Stonewall will use the £65,000 raised to support its work in Britain’s primary and secondary schools. YouGov research for Stonewall shows that homophobia is endemic in Britain’s schools; nine in ten secondary school teachers and more than two in five primary school teachers say children and young people, regardless of their sexual orientation, currently experience homophobic bullying, name calling or harassment in their schools.
