Flower festival to go for gold

A

church in Abbots Langley will next month be filled with the sight and smell of stunning

flower displays provided by local schools, churches and other community organisations. The Flower Festival takes place at St

Lawrence Church every two years, but this year there is a special theme ―More than God‖ as displays reflect the Olympic Games. The event will run from Friday, July 13, to

Sunday, July 15. Visitors can expect to see flowers representing

the Olympic rings, flame, motto and Team GB. Church secretary Lorraine Perry told My

Abbots News that there can be up to 30 displays at the festival, some of them quite large and all of them displaying lots of talent. The festival is being sponsored by the Royal

British Legion and is a real community project with many local schools getting involved. Local teachers and RE coordinators work with

the church and their pupils to involve them in a display that will reflect the theme. Even the youngest are included with a local

pre-school responsible for decorating the lych- gate. Meanwhile the craft fair in the church hall will

be displaying local crafts, paintings and embroidery, while welcome cups of tea, coffee and cakes are served to visitors in the vicarage garden. Both of these events form part of the Abbots Langley Festival of Arts (ALFA) which

starts at the end of June and concludes on the evening of Sunday, July 15, with a Songs of Praise Concert in St Lawrence Church to which all are welcome. This will be followed by a Cheese and Wine party in the vicarage garden. by Linda Anderson
