‘I want the truth about Jason’s death’ A


n Abbots Langley mum will meet with hospital chiefs and Watford MP Richard


Harrington later this month in a bid to get answers about her son‘s death. Three years ago last month, Jason Hearn‘s


body was found in a toilet at Watford General Hospital. Four days earlier, he had been admitted to


hospital after collapsing. While being treated, he became distressed and left, but was returned to hospital by police and detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. During the evening of the same day, Jason told


nurses he wanted to go home and then disappeared. He was registered as a missing person and was found four days later. Karen said: ―He was in hospital for nine hours.


After I left, there was a handover of staff. Whether there was a proper handover or not I don‘t know. He said he wanted to come home and they let him go. They say he discharged himself so they don‘t have to deal with it. ―Nothing‘s going to save him or bring him back. I just want to know what went wrong and

why he wasn‘t assessed. ―It‘s very important. I‘m just trying to ensure


the same thing doesn‘t happen to anyone else. I‘m piecing together a puzzle of what happened.‖ Since Jason‘s death, Karen has worked with


the Herts Mind Network, which promotes positive mental health and assists recovery from mental and emotional distress. She is keen to work with young people with mental health issues. Karen explained: ―I‘m trying to ensure that


what happened to Jason doesn‘t happen to someone else.‖ Jason was a keen photographer and Karen is


fundraising for mental health charities by inviting some donations for her son‘s work. She said: ―I would be delighted to hear from


anyone who wanted to buy one. I want to keep his name going by doing something positive. I‘ve set up an on-going trust in Jason‘s name and I‘m looking for funding for that.‖ To see Jason‘s photos and for more
