THE LINE OF BEAUTY II
Canvas Edition of 195 Size 23”x 19” FRAMED £595
ABOVE HOLKHAM HALL
To set the scene, Rob chose the stunning interior of Holkham Hall in Norfolk. As the finest Palladian interior in the country it has already been used to great cinematic effect in the 2008 film ‘The Duchess’ with Keira Knightly and Ralph Fiennes. Rob chose to paint his couple on the famous staircase in the ‘Marble’ Hall, backed by an intricately worked design of ironwork and alabaster, and brought the whole scene into sharp focus with an astonishing clarity and detail across every inch of the canvas. The steps lead to the Grand Saloon which is a sumptuous room lined with red velvet, and once more Rob again uses its features to powerful effect, contrasting the dark formality of the room with the intimate pose of the couple lit up in a dazzling shaft of sunlight. Rob’s use of

light is another outstanding quality of these images, and here he pays tribute to an artist from another age – Caravaggio – whose mastery of light and shadow gave his work previously unseen depth and power. For Rob the light is another element that he can incorporate into his narrative, highlighting the centre of the story that he wants to tell. With the ballet dancers in repose, Rob again decided to concentrate on detail. He initially created these two beautiful pieces on a grand scale in order to give himself the space to show the minutia, particularly of the fabric of skirts and curtains. Rob himself was delighted with the finished pieces, commenting that they had an unprecedented strength and drama.
