Wisdom
“Be calm, be tranquil, before the fearless release of your brush stroke…” Danielle O’Connor Akiyama
Danielle O’Connor Akiyama has a unique story to tell. When she narrates it and describes her work in her own words, painting and poetry sit naturally on the same page. On her journey through life, she records her experiences with great artistic flair and deeply personal poignancy. Some years ago, Danielle visited Kyoto with her family and created a series which she described as ‘Kyoto musings’; her beautiful new image ‘Ancient Wisdom’ is a progression from this series. While in Kyoto she came across an exquisite square of red silk that captured her imagination with its movement and fluidity, and its hue of pure saturation. She bought the square and placed in her studio.
1 Much later the series developed,
reminiscent of the largest wooden Buddhist temple where she had found the red silk. As she comments: “There are times when these moments of inspiration simmer away in the recesses of my dream world. As they dance out, all five of my senses hold me captive in recollection…” While the Kyoto works are about knowledge and family love, this new piece goes one step further and is about tapping into the wisdom of ages handed down through the generations. Danielle continues: “It has to do with one’s own spiritual growth and being influenced by the sage advice of your elders. I think the subtlety of the background provides the fluidity for thought and introspection.”
