FINE ART PREVIEW

so Henderson decided to try his luck on the railings of the Bayswater Road. This turned out to be a defining moment in his life and career. Henderson’s work began to sell for hundreds of pounds, his reputation grew, and he found a following of serious collectors. Soon he attracted the attention of the official art market and gallery owners began vying for representation rights. These were heady days from the young artist from Brazil, and marked the beginning of an amazing new life and career. He set up home in London, married and had a family, and now paints full time in his riverside London studio. When he began to paint seriously Henderson had no money to travel so London was his subject of choice. As his work began to sell however, he ventured across the channel and on into Europe, mostly by train. He would splash out on an inter-railing ticket and then, with just a few francs in his pocket, would paint his way around the inspirational cities of Italy and France. Once he had established himself he started to devote some serious time and money his own special brand of research in the form of excursions to new places. He simply couldn’t get enough of the world! From New York it seemed only a step to San Francisco, Tokyo, even Sydney. Time and time again though Henderson comes back to two of his most beloved subjects - London and New York. As he says:

“Having spent time in many of the world’s most exciting cities, I still think it was the right decision when I made London my home all those years ago. For me this city has a magical combination of flamboyance and intimacy: the world famous landmarks, high profile night spots and celebrity inhabitants co-exist with the unpretentious pubs, wide green spaces and genuine local communities. When I travel the world, I find inspiration wherever I go; but my favourite place is still my riverside studio here in London. I feel a great fondness for New York too, as all great cities are so much more than a sum of their parts, and New York is a classic example of this phenomenon. It represents a way of life and has become an international symbol of style and sophistication. While I aim to portray the individual elements that make it special - architecture, population, culture - I also strive to convey this sense of ‘city as icon’.”

ALL AMERICAN HERO
