n Raceboat International this issue I feel that we have covered a broad spectrum of current worldwide powerboat racing from the rejuvenating of classes for


young racers, to the beginning of a new season for Class I offshore and Formula 1. And whilst there are many series already underway, like Australian Formula which is already half way through, the US OSS season kicked off in Biloxi in April with SBI’s curtain raiser race in May


We understand from a very reliable source that the offshore scene in the US is not what it used to be (with much smaller fields and worryingly, an ongoing threat of litigation is making organisers there very ‘twitchy’. Trouble is that the standard of safety provision at grand prix events around the world is very inconsistent .......


There is some positive news from Britain


though. By the time you read this, the contracts between the RYA and Affinity Partnership Ltd should be signed, sealed and delivered. It means the future of British Circuit racing is secure for the foreseeable future as Affinity Partnership will be running the National Series. That is really great news, but we wish the same could be said for the UK’s offshore fleet. Although the RYA called for an extraordinary meeting attended by all the organising clubs that are affiliated to the RYA, to address the lack of boats....... it appears nothing significant came out of the get-together apart from the clubs agreeing to


co-operate in organising events. It’s very easy


to point the finger of blame at the RYA for the decline of numbers in UK offshore racing, but teams themselves must shoulder some of the responsibility. A lack of commitment from owners makes it impossible for clubs to secure any investment from venues or potential sponsors when the number of boats competing remains unconfirmed until the bitter end. With the offshore and circuit calendars looking increasingly busy between now until December, we can only hope that a few more boats turn out when the major races are staged. Something else I’ve noticed about todays international and national events is the lack of media presence. This, I am told is due to lack of funds. However, a keen PR person costs very little. Photos taken on mobile phones and race reports written by amateurs are becoming more frequent which does not reflect well on our sport, although they are better than nothing.


The immutable Rouen 24 hour race is upon us and instead of its traditional format of running throughout the night, the race now stops at dusk and restarts at daybreak. The modification was introduced on safety grounds. A full report on the race and all the other major events will be in our next edition
