introduction of the Teignmouth Carnival Royalty Float. For many a year Teignmouth was not represented on the South Devon circuit, and because of this our Procession Day suffered. However, a few years back,
Dave Matthews and Shane Maryon decided it was time for Teignmouth to re-enter the south Devon circuit with a royalty float. Dave Matthews (and friends) put together the framework for the float, which Shane Maryon (and friends) then added their flair and creativity.
This resulted in the Fairies in the Garden float. A concept that won
Teignmouth accolades and trophies up and down the south coast. We were back! Since then we have continued to enter our ‘Little Spanish Town’ and ‘Egyptian Treasures’ floats on the south Devon circuit, once again winning many prizes along the way. Last year our Egyptian Treasures’ float was even entered on the east Devon circuit. Everyone has said how great it is to see
Teignmouth represented in this way. The theme for this year’s float remains a closely guarded secret, but when you do see it, please give us a wave and a cheer as we pass by. The 2012 Carnival is just around the corner. Where does the time go! Your committee is getting ready to put on another great week of events for you. There will be something for everyone. The It’s A Knockout competition will be on the opening Saturday this year, to maximise involvement and support.
Also on the opening Saturday will be the second
Teign SkateFest, and entertainment in the marquee for the evening.
Sunday welcomes back our Choir Sing Off, which is kindly organised by our very own singing sensations, Red Rock Harmony. This event went down a storm last year. Don’t miss out this year. Monday is devoted to Services Day, and is being assembled as we speak. Demonstrations by the different services will be taking place throughout the day, so buy yourself a programme nearer the
time to be sure of the dates and times of the events you are interested in. Tuesday will once again be Children’s Day. I think this speaks for itself. Teignmouth’s Got Talent will be on the Wednesday this year. Heats in the Marquee all afternoon, and the final on the Big Outdoor Stage (weather permitting). Come along and cheer on your favourite acts. As mentioned above, Thursday will be the Carnival Procession Day this year, and on the Friday we are thinking of putting on a Mini Olympics for the kids, and maybe a tribute band of some description for the evening. But nothing is set in stone just yet. And then our last day will be our Festival of Music. Notice the change in wording this year. It is our intention to have different genres of music performing for you on this day. It will be different, that I can assure you. The last thing I would like to mention before I sign off, is that none of the above has been
confirmed as yet, so keep an eye open for local news articles, the official Teignmouth Carnival 2012 programme, and carnival posters for further information nearer the time. If you require any further information regarding the carnival, or you would like to get involved in some way, whether that be volunteering or sponsorship, or advertising in the programme, visit our website,
http://www.teignmouthcarnival.co.uk/, or e-mail
admin@teignmouthcarnival.co.uk, or if you would just like to speak with someone telephone me on 07725 607295.
I shall be looking for sponsorship and advertising
over the next couple of months, so if you wish to support the carnival do contact us. Without the support of local business and traders, and the town and district councils, Teignmouth Carnival would not be the success it is today – so please do buy local where possible. And finally, Teignmouth Carnival week runs from Saturday, July 21 to Saturday, July 28. Put the dates in your calendar, book the time off
work. This is a week not to be missed. See you there.
Join the party atmosphere of Teignmouth Carnival — a week that is sure to go off with a bang!
