STROLLING along the seafront towards Eastcliff you will see the former Coastguard lookout perched above the cafe – this is the home of the Teignmouth Branch of the National Coastwatch Institution. The NCI was set up in Teignmouth eight
years ago and is staffed by highly trained and experienced men and women who give up their spare time as volunteers to watch all sea movements as well as the sea walls and beach – all in the interests of the safety of sea users and the general public. Every vessel in sight is recorded detailing its description and movements in case of an emergency. Radar, radio and powerful binoculars are all part of the tower’s equipment. takes part in joint exercises with the Teignmouth Lifeboat. The tower is operational every day of the
year during most daylight hours and currently has around 70 active members. The members enjoy their shifts and are always ready to welcome visitors and show them what they do. Regular school visits to the tower give local children the opportunity to learn about safety on the beach and on the sea. The members have a monthly meeting with guest speakers, quiz nights and a whole range of social events and NCI welcomes enquiries from anyone interested in volunteering for this important work. NCI is entirely self-supporting through collections and contributions from local people and businesses which enable this work to continue. For more information contact NCI at 01626 772377 or email:
