WELL WORTHAVISIT: The Unicorn at Pontypool

IF YOU’RE in search of ahearty meal at reasonableprices then The Unicorn on Albion Road, Pontypool, is the place to find it. Youare greeted by candle-lit tables,

Toby jugs hanging from the ceiling and gentle background soul music. The owner and chef of the family

run business,Helen Swidenbank, 31, showed us the menuand specials board. The dishes are all home- cooked. While Iwanted to save room for dessert, my friend Tracyopted fora starter of deep-fried breaded brie with cranberry sauce (£4.50) and awell- presented dish of three, large, oozing pieces wasbrought to the table. with cherry vine tomatoes, peas,a large field mushroom, and three huge onion rings and chips on the side. The steak wasbeautifullytender

with hardlyany fatand waswell worth £14.95. Tracyhad the highlyrecommended steak and Guinness pie with chips and peas, for £6.95. The pie wastopped with light fluffy pastry and inside there wasplenty of meatinthick gravy. It washard to choose from their large dessert menu, with eachitem

costing just £3.95. Though full, Icould not resist the EtonMess, whichoutdid my expectations with plenty of meringue and berries. Ican honestlysay this place is well

worth avisit. After our meal we decided to join in

thepub quiz, readout by Helen’s dad Haydn, who bought his ownhumour to the evening. Although we were a team of just two, we didn’t come last – of thatI’m very proud.
