LEGACY GIVING CANADIAN BLOOD SERVICES Plant your legacy on Victoria Day Canadian Blood Services and The Greenery in Kelowna are asking you to “plant your lega-
cy” and give blood for those in need this upcoming Victoria Day. “On certain public holidays, it is more difficult for Canadian Blood Services in Kelowna to col- lect adequate levels of blood because of fewer donors booked in to the clinic,” notes Anita Dunford, events specialist for the Southern Interior. “That is why we have partnered with The Greenery to ask people to plant your legacy and do- nate on May 21.” The Greenery is also offering people who visit the clinic on Victoria Day a free herb in sup-
port of the cause. Every minute of every day, someone needs blood. It takes: — Up to 50 units of blood to help someone in a car accident — Up to two units to help someone who needs brain surgery — Up to five units a week to help someone with leukemia — Two to eight units to help someone with internal bleeding — Up to two units a day to help someone undergoing a bone marrow transplant — Up to two units for a hip replacement You can book an appointment at 103-1865 Dilworth Dr. by calling 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) or visiting
www.blood.ca.
Appointments are recommended to help reduce clinic lineups and wait times. Healthy people can donate blood every 56 days at the age of 17. First-time donors after the age of 61, or regular donors who want to continue donating after their 71st birthday will need to consult their doctor for medical permission to donate. Donors must feel well and are required to have their donor card or photo and signed I.D. at the time of donation.
Examples of legacy gifts Outright Gifts
Gifts of cash are the simplest and most common form of donation. A receipt is is- sued for the full amount, creating a tax savings in the gift year. Gifts of Securities Listed securities are immediate gifts and include stocks, bonds, bills, mutual funds,
warrants and
futures. There are tax advantages to gifting the securities directly as op- posed to liquidating and donating the proceeds. Charitable Bequests
A bequest is a specific dollar amount or percentage of an estate left to a charity in a donor’s
will. This is the easiest and most popular form of deferred
gift. There are spe- cial tax advantages to leaving a bequest. Life Insurance This deferred gift suits donors who are interested in offering a larger gift than cir- cumstances would normally allow. Ways to give include: transfer ownership of a paid or existing policy, or purchase a
new policy naming your charity of choice the owner and beneficiary. Depending on the type of policy, you could receive a donation receipt for the cash
value and for each premium paid in the future. Charitable Remainder Trust This deferred gift provides income either for life or for a specific amount of time. Property, cash or securities are irrevocably transferred to a trustee, and at the end of that time whatever remains in the trust becomes your gift to the charity. You receive an immediate donation receipt for the actuarially calculated value of the remainder in- terest.
