LEGACY GIVING By MARLA O’BRIEN

It has been said that “the library is the living room of a community.” When you think about it, what other public place can you visit to relax and read a maga- zine, or spend time with other families enjoying a story, or use a computer terminal to connect with friends the world over? All for free! In this digital age, some presume the library is a duplication of the worldwide web. In fact, only a fraction of the world’s information and resources are available on the Internet. An even smaller percentage of this knowledge is freely accessible and accurate. The library is a place where trained informa- tion professionals can help you find what you’re looking for, in the format you need it, at no cost. Whether you’re remodelling your home, plan- ning a vacation, looking for a movie for the weekend, wanting to build your music collec- tion, need fun activities to do with the grandchil- dren, the Okanagan Regional Library has it all. Since the ORL began in 1936, we’ve bor- rowed millions of items and held storytimes for

branches to serve you in the Central Okanagan. And we’ve been helped along the way thanks to generous gifts of time and mon- ey from our many supporters. Our Friends of the Library groups in Kelowna,

West Kelowna and Peachland have donated countless hours to organize book sales, which in turn have resulted in donations for our branches to support the Summer Reading Club, author visits, new equipment and much more that wouldn’t be possible with limited tax dollars. For example, thanks to the Kelowna Friends of the Library, the Kelowna Branch on Ellis Street has a digital reader/scanner/printer that can digitize microfiche of old newspaper so that articles from 100 years ago can be print- ed and sent via email anywhere in the world. es, and have an endowment fund set up with the Central Okanagan Foundation for anyone who wishes to contribute. Another great example of Friends support is the popular speakers series held monthly dur- ing the winter and spring at the Westbank Branch in Westridge Mall, funded by the Westbank Friends of the Library. The ORL also accepts monetary donations designated to any of our branches or towards a specific collection, and as a registered char- ity can issue tax receipts for gifts. We are grateful to those who consider leav- ing a legacy to the library by naming the ORL in their estate plans. More information on any of these options is

available at http://www.orl.bc.ca/about-us/sup- port-your-orl or in your local branch – just ask for a “Supporting your ORL” brochure. All gifts help the ORL continue to be a corner- stone of our communities, that “living room” where neighbours can share information and entertainment for the benefit of all. Marla O’Brien is public relations officer for Okanagan Regional Library.
