City nights

Like many local authorities across the country, Bristol City Council had to fi nd £28 million of savings in 2011/12 and up to £78 million over the next three years. Upgrading all of Bristol’s streetlights to white light is part of the cost- saving strategy – and has other benefi ts too. The project involved replacing high-pressure sodium streetlighting with more effi cient ceramic metal halide (CMH) lamps. In cases where the gear tray, lamp and ballast were replaced, Philips’ CosmoPolis urban lights were used, while GE’s Streetwise was fi tted when only the lamp and ballast were being replaced. Dimmable ballasts were installed in all cases: the dimming has been tested and saves more

energy. Dimming occurs between 7pm and 6am – and it is possible that the lamps will be dimmed to an even lower output in the future. Annual savings from this project are

projected to be 4,368MWh, equivalent to £503,000 each year and CO2

savings of 2,381t a year. That means the project will pay for itself in just over two years. Furthermore, with the Carbon Reduction Commitment’s guidance on streetlighting changing this year, the council will escape nearly £30,000 in exposure. James King, energy manager at Bristol

City Council, says the funding from Salix is vital. ‘Without this investment many local
