: I just purchased a 2012 six-cylinder Dodge Journey with all-wheel-drive. I have noticed that when I am stopped on an incline then proceed to go forward, the vehicle will roll backwards until I give it more gas. Otherwise, the car runs fine. Is it normal for this vehicle?

: I have a 2002 Camry with 115,000 miles and a 2005 Camry with 89,000 miles. Both Camry’s make the same noise, which comes from the trunk area and sounds as though the spare tire is loose and banging around over bumpy roads. With passengers in the rear seat or heavy items in the trunk, there is no noise. I have checked over and under the car and have not found anything to be loose. Any ideas?

opinion, this is a normal characteristic of this transmission design.

: I need to get a new car this year but I’m having a dickens of a time finding one I can fit into! I’m 6’6” with a long torso, and it seems as if many of the current cars have lower doors as well as less headroom. What would you suggest?

Q

: In my experience, when vehicle engineers design and build engines and their management systems, it is always a compromise.

A

: I would take a look at the Nissan Cube, Scion xB, Kia Soul and Subaru Forester. These are small with plenty of headroom. You might also want to check out one of the larger used car lots and sample any car that fits you and your style. Readers, do you have any suggestions for our tall reader?

A

: I recently purchased a 2008 Mercedes C300, which I love. It runs like a dream and is in showroom condition, despite the 37,000 miles on it. An ad for a “performance chip” has come to my attention. The claim is that this chip will reprogram the air/fuel ratio, ignition timing, and other aspects of the vehicle’s engine to safely increase the power, while increasing fuel economy significantly. Is this a scam, and will it hurt the car or affect the warranty?

Finally, follow all of the manufacturers maintenance suggestions to keep your new vehicle running like new.

Aftermarket performance chips may improve fuel economy but could potentially affect performance and emissions levels. If the engine suffers damage and it is the result of the performance chip, it will most certainly not be covered by the warranty. My feeling is unless you are going to reprogram the vehicles computer system while the car is on a dynamometer, I wouldn’t spend the money.

: I purchased a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee a few days ago. I was interested in getting

information on what I can do now while my car is new to protect my investment in the long term. For example, is waxing with a clear-coat finish a good idea or is it better just to leave it alone? What can I can I do to protect the interior (I have a dog)?

: Cleaning and waxing with quality products certainly makes sense to preserve the vehicle’s
