Business Briefcase

by Rich Ott assistant editor

Hello, all. Let me start by giving big congratulations to all our local graduates this year, some who have already graduated and others getting ready to at the end of the month. Good luck in your future endeavors. Mr. Briefcase wants to get personal for a minute here and congratulate Mrs. Briefcase, who can now be known as Mrs. Briefcase, RN. She completed the two-year nursing program at

Rich Ott

We now return to the regular Business Briefcase column, minus the shameless plugs.

Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale and is now looking for a job, so, if you happen to be someone in power at an area hospital (wink, wink) my email is at the end of the column.

OK, let’s begin by reminding a lot of you out there what is going in at the former On the Border Mexican Restaurant and Cantina location at 1507 N. Litchfield Road in Goodyear. Mr. Briefcase had written about it two times in January, but since the tenant improvements began, many readers have been calling or emailing him asking what is going in there. Well, Mr. Briefcase doesn’t remember everything he reads either, so you’re forgiven. The building will soon feature two

businesses: FastMed Urgent Care and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. The former is taking the majority of

the building at 4,000 square feet. This will mark the 16th Arizona location for the chain. There are also 26 locations in

North Carolina, the only other state with FastMed Urgent Care businesses. Don’t let the name fool you, though, as

the facility will offer more than just urgent care, as FastMed provides dermatology, physicals, flu shots and vaccines, occupational health services and general medicine.

a variety of items, such as pizza, pasta dishes, burgers, chicken wings, sandwiches and salads. While we are in Buckeye, Dick’s H2O

The Goodyear location will be open 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sundays and holidays. The facility plans to open on the best day of the year, June 2 — Mr. Briefcase’s birthday. He’ll be 72 (man, he looks good for his age, doesn’t he?). Now for the other business soon to open there, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which will occupy 2,500 square feet. This will be the 20th Arizona location for the massive chain restaurant. There are Five Guys in 47 states as well as Canada. Mr. Briefcase would like to be in one of the states where there are only four guys or less. (He’ll be here every Tuesday people if you’d like to come back for more.) Five Guys’ menu features burgers and fries of course, as well as hot dogs and sandwiches. The majority of Five Guys restaurants are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Elsewhere, ground has finally begun

to move for the much anticipated Native New Yorker in Buckeye. The restaurant is being built at 457 S. Watson Road, on the southeast corner of Interstate 10 and Watson, near the Denny’s and Discount Tire.

Hut at 21699 W. Yuma Road, Suite 101B, is no longer open. The business — which opened Aug. 21, 2009, and sold water as well as snacks — was closed down Feb. 2 by the Maricopa County Environment Services for failure to renew a permit to operate, according to a letter posted on the door. Two more closures to report while we are on the subject. Both of these businesses were owned and operated by the same family. Palm Valley Cleaners at 14175 W. Indian School Road, Suite A1, and Canyon Trails Cleaners at 380 N. Estrella Parkway, Suite A4, in Goodyear, both closed last month. The former was on the southwest corner of Indian School and Litchfield roads and the latter was on the northwest corner of Van Buren Street and Estrella. Moving on, like this business is planning to do in Avondale. Howard Norman LTD, a doctor’s

Tolleson company a BBB

ethics award finalist The Better Business Bureau (BBB) announced its 15 Arizona companies selected as finalists for the 2012 BBB Business Ethics Award. The BBB Business Ethics Awards were established in 2002 by the BBB Foundation to recognize outstanding businesses that maintain a solid commitment to ethics and trust. Five of the 15 companies will be named winners in their category during the May 17 awards dinner and ceremony at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa.

TV and radio personality Pat McMahon will serve as the master of ceremonies for the seventh year in a row, and Fiesta Bowl Executive Director Robert Shelton will deliver the keynote address. The 2012 Business Ethics Awards

finalists include Auto Body World, Inc. in Tolleson.

APS ranked No. 3

This will be the 22nd Arizona location for the 32-year-old chain, started by Judy and Floyd Anderson after they moved to the desert from Buffalo, N.Y. Once they hit five family-owned locations, the restaurant began franchising. There is one location in Washington and another soon to be built in Texas, those are the only two not in Arizona. A Native New Yorker menu features

office, is moving locations after nearly 40 years. The 78-year-old family physician, who is a Goodyear resident, plans to move to his new office in July. The doctor and his staff are currently at 425 N. Central Ave., but will soon move one block north to a space double its current size at 725 N. Central Ave. The new space is where PPEP Tech High School once stood before vacating Feb. 3.

The practice has four doctors, one of whom speaks Spanish. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. And now you know what I know.

in nation for solar usage Arizona Public Service was recently

ranked No. 3 by the Solar Electric Power Association in its top 10 list of solar utilities annual megawatts.

APS also took fourth in the annual watts per customer category.

APS added approximately 145

megawatts of solar energy to its system in 2011, which helped it beat out more than 240 other utility companies for the third place ranking. No. 1 was California-based Pacific Gas and Electric and No. 2 was New Jersey-based Public Service Electric and Gas Co. APS’ current renewable portfolio contains more than 900 megawatts of renewable energy, which includes projects online or under development. That is enough electricity to power 225,000 Arizona homes.
