Top 10 tips for data migration success
Research shows that more than 50% of data migration projects run late and/or over budget, the most common reason cited being “poor quality data”. Chris Turner offers some quick tips on efficient data migration.
1 USE AN EXPERIENCED PARTNER Enterprise applications can revolutionise and streamline your business operations and efficiency, but this does not come without complexity so use someone who does this day in and day out as this will save you time, money and pain.
2 GET THE DATA MIGRATION EXPERTS INVOLVED AT AN EARLY STAGE
Data migration should be scoped with initial brief and budgeted for; this will allow for a better understanding of your data. Data analysis at an early stage can identify the data conditions that will need to be managed throughout the whole ETL process.
3 UNDERSTAND YOUR DATA
Understand what your data is and what it could and should be used for. This will allow you to make sure that relevant information is captured from the outset and irrelevant data is not inputted or stored.
4 BUDGET CORRECTLY Senior management need transparency in all business initiatives to justify the return on investment. Data migration should not be an exception to this rule so budget correctly.
5 PLAN
This is the most critical part of a data migration project and must be done properly before the ETL process is started. It needs to cover all eventualities with the relevant required technology being identified from the outset, this will reduce developer work, save money and allows you to decide what is in scope and what is out of scope.

Establish the scalability of the solution across the lifetime of its usage. This should include an understanding of the volumes now and in the future.

6 RESOURCE Get your resource right both internally and externally and make sure all relevant areas of the business are aware that they may be needed i.e. finance, marketing and senior management.
7 FUTURE-PROOF YOUR SYSTEM
Understand the complexity of your data both now and into the future. The range of data values or data quality in an operational system may exceed the expectations of designers at the time of validation and transformation. Allow for different scenarios for example, daily batch to multiple-day micro batch to integration with message queues or real-time change-data capture for continuous transformation and update.
8 CLEAN YOUR DATA AND KEEP IT CLEAN This is the ideal opportunity to clean and then put the relevant data protocol in place to keep the data clean. Data cleansing saves time and money.
9 USE THE DATA MIGRATION AS A REASON FOR CHANGE This is the ideal time to create what the business actually needs with the correct business rules and without those historic work arounds .The likelihood is that the new system will be different so train people and make sure they use it correctly.
