Lady Pythons Softball Remains in Playoff Hunt

Pelham’s fi rst baseman Alex Hall makes a nice fi elding play, but doesn’t quite get back to the bag in time to nail the Portsmouth runner

scoring Paradis with the thrilling game winner. The victory was a psychological lift for the Pythons as they fi nally picked up a win against Portsmouth ace, Mariah Crisp, who had owned Pelham over their previous four meetings; fi ring two no-hitters as well as two one-hitters. On Friday, May 4, Pelham took the short trip to Hollis- Brookline where they battled the fi rst place and undefeated Cavaliers. In out hitting their hosts by a nine to four total, the visiting Pythons were not duly rewarded, losing a closely-fought 5-3 contest. Firing her second strong game in a row, Jordan Parece was the hard-luck loser, as she surrendered only four hits and three earned runs in going the distance. Trailing 1-0 entering the visitor’s half of the fourth, Pelham put up a three spot to take the lead. With two outs, Sarah-Jane Spicer walked, Chantal Roussel singled and Alex Hall doubled them both in to take a 2-1 lead. Kelsey Grimard added an insurance run with an RBI single, driving in Hall, for a 3-1 advantage. But the insurance policy would soon lapse, as the Pythons gave up two runs in each of the next two innings that led to the loss. Offensively, Pelham was led by Hannah Paitchel with three hits. Kelsey Grimmard and Chantal Roussel each picked up a pair of singles. Earning special mention from Coach Lozeau was Roussel for her defensive efforts; “she had six putouts, three of them very impressive.” In referencing her speed and ability in the outfi eld, Lozeau added; “she tracked them (fl y balls) down and saved us some runs – that was big for us.” The weekend passed and Monday found the Lady Pythons hosting Sanborn Regional. Earlier in the season, Pelham grabbed an 8-3 win in a meeting at the Indian’s home fi eld. Sanborn entered the game with a respectable 6-3 record, but once again the Pythons enjoyed some late inning home cooking with another come from behind win, this time to the tune of 6-4. Getting the nod again in the circle was Jordan Parece. The Python sophomore threw a masterful complete game fi ve-hitter, allowing only two earned runs while recording 10 strikeouts. Through three innings of play, the Pythons had only one run to

by Marc Ayotte The Pelham girls’ softball team recently completed a successful week with key, mid-season victories, keeping their post season hopes in good standing. The Lady Pythons had bookend home fi eld wins over Portsmouth and Sanborn, surrounding a losing effort at Hollis-Brookline. After their victory over Sanborn, Pelham’s season record stood at 4-6, putting them in 17th place in the D-II standings, just percentage points behind Pembroke for the fi nal post season spot. The Pythons conclude their regular season schedule at home, on May 25, against those same Spartans, with possible playoff implications lying in wait. On Wednesday, May 4, the Pythons scored two runs in their

fi nal at bat to clip Portsmouth by a score of 3-2. Starter and winner Jordan Parece went the distance for Pelham, yielding just two runs on fi ve hits while fanning four in her seven innings of work in the circle. “She pitched well and stayed focused” recounted head coach Todd Lozeau. “We played error-less behind her” added the Pelham skipper in his accounting for the comeback win. With a run in each of the second and third innings, the visiting Clippers grabbed a 2-0 lead before Hannah Paitchel’s opposite fi eld single plated Alissa Paradis who was on second base after her two-bagger to deep center. In the bottom of the sixth, Pelham’s attempt to tie the game was thwarted as they stranded runners on every base. However, in the home half of the seventh, Pelham mounted a two out rally. A Paradis single put runners on fi rst and second and then a Paitchel pop-up single that fell between the Portsmouth second baseman and right fi elder scored Julia Barsalou (who was a pinch runner for Jill Spatola whose pinch hit walk started the rally). With the score knotted at 2, and runners at the corners, the Pythons pulled-off a double steal,

show for their slow start, and that came as a result of an Indian fi elding miscue, allowing Hannah Paitchel to score on a wild pitch. Pelham trailed 2-1 as they headed into the bottom of the fi fth, but an Elissa Moguaro RBI double coupled with a Kathryn Mostone run scoring single, put the Pythons on top by a 3-2 score. After Sanborn scored a run in the fi rst half of the sixth to tie the game, Pelham snapped-back with three of their own in the home half. With Paitchel, Parece and Mogauro fi lling the bases, Mostone slapped a clutch two run single for a 5-3 lead. Chantal Roussel’s groundout drove in Moguaro, ending the Python scoring for the day, as they fought off the Indians in the seventh for the victory.

Hannah Paitchel, with her three hit performance, improved her season batting average to .454 (15-33) and Kathryn Mostone with two singles and three RBI, led the Pelham offense. In keeping a positive outlook for his team’s playoff push, Coach Lozeau noted; “through our fi rst ten (games) I am pleased with where we are, given our strength of schedule”.

NH to Celebrate Drinking Water Week 2012

submitted by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services The NH Department of Environmental Services is kicking off Drinking Water Week 2012 with a call to “Celebrate the Essential” throughout New Hampshire. Throughout the week, DES will celebrate water by recognizing the essential role drinking water plays in our daily lives, with special attention to water infrastructure, the value of water, and issues affecting our water resources. “Drinking water is one of New Hampshire’s most precious

resources, and keeping it safe, clean and abundant through careful management and protection is vital to the state’s economy and public health,” said DES Drinking Water and Groundwater Bureau Administrator Sarah Pillsbury. To commemorate the occasion, water utilities, policy makers, educators, and others will celebrate drinking water through school events and public presentations. About Drinking Water Week For more than 35 years, the American Water Works Association and its members have celebrated Drinking Water Week - a unique opportunity for both water professionals and the communities they serve to join together to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives.
