Vice president of Fundraising Joe O’Connell (R) speaks to the details of fundraising involved in the Pelham Little League; Chris Mader, President of the LL, displays a Dustin Pedroia jersey which is one of four jerseys (Bird, Chara, Gronkowski) to be distributed when the winners are announced at the Majors All-Star game on June 2

by Marc Ayotte Play Ball! That was the traditional baseball

cry echoed out by Pelham little leaguers at Muldoon Park on Saturday, May 5, as season opening ceremonies for the town’s 43rd season culminated. Players representing all the teams in the league’s six divisions gathered on the infield and spectators lined the foul lines to partake in the festivities. Opening remarks were given by members of the Pelham Baseball Board of Directors followed by the introduction of all the teams and their respective coaches. The community’s interest in Pelham baseball

was depicted not only in the large Saturday morning crowd that assembled at the Babe Ruth Field, but also by the tremendous sponsorship support. From the Challenger Division up to the Majors, no less than 32 sponsors stepped up to support this season’s play. Opening remarks were delivered by the Baseball Board of Directors and followed by the introduction of the teams,

coaches and the abovementioned sponsors. Included in the opening was the notation that approximately 70 percent of 12-13 year olds stop playing organized sports due to the ‘lack of fun’ – a statistic that the Pelham Board does a very good job in addressing. The proceedings continued with the reading of the Little League Player Pledge, Little League Volunteer Pledge as well as the Positive Coaching Alliance Parent Pledge (PCA), a doctrine that promotes a culture of having fun and teaching life lessons while playing the sport. The singing of the National Anthem then preceded the first pitch and “let’s play ball.” Pelham Baseball is also conducting a fundraiser

in which members of the little league have a chance to win one of four Boston sports’ star jerseys, including Larry Bird and Dustin Pedroia. For more information on the fundraiser and Pelham baseball, visit pelhamnhbaseball.com.
