Theo Paphitis from Dragons’ Den has awarded one of his Twitter Small Business Sunday awards to Parable Designs of East Devon. Each week, Theo invites companies to
‘tweet’ him on social networking site Twitter, summing up their business in no more than 140 characters, and he chooses his six favourites who he then ‘retweets’ to his quarter of a million Twitter followers. Fusing historical design elegance with creative engineering, Parable’s hand-crafted candles and lamps faithfully replicate designs from an unrivalled private collection of vintage wallpaper printing rollers from the 1870s to 1970s 3D in relief. Theo presented the award to Parable founders Nigel Parker and Amanda Barry, and fellow Dragon Deborah Meaden also tweeted that Parable Candles are “gorgeous and unique”. And that’s not all. The Right Honourable
Hugo Swire, MP for East Devon, has nominated Parable for the Made By Britain initiative which aims to draw up a diverse and comprehensive picture of contemporary British Industry. Parable are nominated alongside leading

a large part of my life and I’ve seen many changes over the years. “I like working at the club alongside
many other long-serving members of staff, and meeting all the people who have come and gone over the years. “Work has always been very important to me and I take great pride in doing a job well.”

Tragedy struck when Francis
was nine years old – he was hit by a motorbike while crossing Rydon Lane and suffered life-threatening injuries which still affect him today. As well as severe head injuries, he almost lost a leg. Through the St Nicholas Centre which helped people with learning and physical challenges find employment, he was offered a job at Exeter Golf and Country Club, and his commitment to hard work was obvious from day one. When he started working in the housekeeping team, he voluntarily started his day at 4am to ensure the rooms were ready. General manager Martin Halse said: “Francis is a highly- valued member of the team and we’re honoured he has devoted so many years to helping us ensure we offer consistently high levels of service to our members and customers.” For more

British brands including Aston Martin, Bentley, Aardman and Dyson. Amanda and Nigel said: “We’re absolutely delighted that our work has caught the attention of the wider business world. “Since the chance discovery of the original wallpaper printing rollers, we’ve been
dedicated to gaining recognition for the artisans whose skills in carving the intricate patterns – works of art in their own right – have been hitherto overlooked, and about keeping design, innovation and manufacturing firmly rooted in Britain.” For more
