Mike Attard “

The key is our experience and knowledge of the lighting sector, which has enabled us to reconnect and establish Spectral with its key audiences through good products that are well marketed. Mike Attard, UK Managing Director at Ridi Lighting

A1:Because of its

A1:What do you think has been the biggest change to Spectral since your launch in 2010?

MA:I think the two biggest changes have been the quality of production and the improved access to the brand in the UK. Before our acquisition it had an established following in Germany but wasn’t widely known beyond. Drawing on Ridi’s contacts and sales team has been hugely beneficial and Spectral is beginning to develop its own audience and advocates. Our future push for the brand will be targeted at the designer.

A1:Do you believe the

financial climate has had a large effect on the lighting industry?

MA:I think it has affected all areas of business involved in the built environment. The effects were delayed from the initial collapse in 2008 as projects were already in progress. We’re a few years on now and I think it is really starting to bite. Where customers were prepared to look at payback periods for the right energy efficient products, decisions now come down to quick return on investment. I think once LED products reach a lower price point then we will see the market stimulated again.

custom-made tracking, the H-Profil has vast scope for versatility. What spaces do you see this product excelling in?

MA:So far we have seen it applied to large public spaces, as it is able to mold to the form of any space with the light sources placed wherever they are required. A nice example is the Lohring train station in Germany where the lines of light work well with the vaulted ceiling and the setting above the tracks. Here in the UK we have started to receive a lot of orders for circular formations studded with LED fittings. These are shaping up really well as feature pieces and look like post-modern chandeliers – very striking, well constructed and extremely efficient too.

A1: What can we expect from Spectral in the future?

MA:I think we proved in Frankfurt that we are one to watch. The new

products have been well received and praised for both the design flair and performance. What to expect in the future? More unconventional designs that bend the rules.
