Community That birthday extravaganza will
be followed on Friday by 100 Artists Celebrating 100 Years, a free art, music and dance festival in the downtown square west of Arizona Avenue. Visitors can pick up a complimentary copy of the Southside History Cookbook beginning at 8 p.m., and former Mayor Coy Payne will be available to sign copies. On Saturday, the celebration culminates with the Chandler Bash of the Century at Tumbleweed Park. Families are encouraged to pack a picnic and enjoy a day of free entertainment with fellow revelers. “Several outstanding local bands will

entertain the crowd, and vendors will offer a variety of food, beverages and merchandise for sale,” notes Reynolds. “There will be crafts, interactive amusements for children and a dunk tank. The Chandler Recreation Division will host old-fashioned games and contests for all ages. Children can play musical chairs, limbo and run silly relay races, while older youth and adults can compete in pillow sack and three-legged races, water balloon tossing and pie- eating contests.” Officials will also commemorate the city’s agricultural past during the bash, with a series of offerings in the southeast corner of the park hosted by Chandler Future Farmers of America. These include a petting zoo, city history trivia contests, eco-tours and a scavenger hunt. Later in the day, park visitors can peek at the heavens via solar
and star telescopes provided by the East Valley Astronomy Club. With so much to do, city officials advise checking out the official website for a complete list of all activities, times and locations. “Entertainment schedules, band bios, game rules and parking information for all three Celebration Weekend events are online at

Time in a bottle One eagerly anticipated highlight of the Centennial celebration is the dedication of the Chandler time capsule, which will be sealed until the city’s 150th birthday in 2062. Area residents were invited to submit items for possible inclusion in the capsule that represent the status quo in 2012 and would illuminate the current lifestyle for future citizens.
“The Time Capsule Committee has
received an interesting mix of materials for consideration for the Chandler 2062 Time Capsule,” says Chandler Museum Administrator Jody A. Crago. “We have received coins, such as an Arizona quarter, and a penny from our 50th birthday in 1962. There have been schools that have submitted photos of their staff, Girl Scout troops that have completed memory projects and authors who have submitted their books. The City included materials documenting Centennial celebrations, this year’s budget and photos documenting some of the City’s facilities.”

ABOVE GROUND: A glass and wood time capsule that will not be buried will hold collectible items for the City of Chandler. The above ground time capsule, with art glass from area artist BJ Katz and on wheels, will be sealed and put on display in the lobby of Chandler City Hall or can go to other areas for the public to peer in. The visible time capsule was the idea of members of the Chandler Arts Commission, which provided the funding to create it, following the previously buried time capsule that was unable to be found for a period of time, and when it was, the contents were damaged. There have also been some very
creative submissions that show the unique character of their architects. “A Centennial club from Chandler High School submitted a mini time capsule of items that high school students think are popular among students, including
