Glasstown Arts District It’s Third Friday and a half-dozen blocks of North High Street in Millville are filled with people browsing the galleries, meeting friends for dinner or lingering over an early evening drink Now in its 11th year, the Glasstown Arts
District has revitalized downtown Millville. Public galleries at the Riverfront Renais- sance Center of the Arts, the Clay College and Glasstown Art Glass Studio offer a wide assortment of art work that changes monthly with a variety of mediums and price ranges. Two galleries plus atrium and alcove displays highlight regional artists from Southern New Jersey, and special exhibits feature artists from across the United States. The building houses seven working artists’ studios open to the public on Third Fridays, plus a gift shop that features hand-crafted artisan works in wearable and decorative art forms. The Clay College, part of Cumberland
County College, features a gallery and working studio of artists and students creating at the pottery wheel or sculpting ceramic masterpieces. Glasstown Art Glass Studio is owned by
artist Scott Meyer, a glassblower whose gallery and shop showcase a wide range of his talents. Lamps, vases, plates, paper- weights and special decorative items such as Christmas ornaments are for sale in a range of colors and form, and the three galleries

and working studios are all open daily. Much of the local architecture dates to
the early 20th century and the majority of the buildings have been restored, adding to the ambiance of the area. Most buildings are handicap accessible as are street curbs and parking lot spaces. Private art galleries and studios —
including LaBottega of Art, Tawes Studio of Art, Green Boots Studio and Gallery, Glynnis Reed Studio, J.B. and M.E. along with the Artists’ Consortium — display a variety of artists and the work of the late James Penland. At the Village on High, galleries hours
range from Tuesday
through Sundays; check the website for more information. The Glasstown Arts District also
includes shops that feature ladies wear and accessories, children’s clothing, imported goods, antiques, collectibles, and books. Dining choices include everything from a
quick snack to a gourmet dinner, with a couple of great dessert shops to top off your meal. The century-old Levoy Theatre in the
center of the Glasstown Arts District is expected to open in May 2012 after a mas- sive reconstruction program. It will have its own performing company, the Off Broad Street Players, plus jazz, country, classical and rock ‘n’ roll entertainers, ballet and children’s performances.
