offers free Jazz concerts on the Beach at Kennedy Plaza on the Boardwalk at Mississippi Ave. Kites, kites and more kites grace the
skies over the beaches in Wildwood for the annual Wildwood International Kite Festival featuring individual and team competition on the beach at Rio Grande Avenue and inside the Wildwoods Con- vention Center. The festival features world- renowned kite builders and competitors, kite-making workshops and exhibits, indoor competition, children’s activities and an illuminated night kite show. One of the oldest beach events, a
beloved and simple sport especially in today’s technology age, takes place in Wildwood every June – and has for almost 90 years! With roller coasters and the ocean behind them, youngsters between the ages of 8 and 14, called mibsters, compete at Ringer Stadium on the beach in the four-day National Marbles Tourna- ment. Check out the National Marbles Hall of Fame at the George F. Boyer Museum on Pacific Avenue, not far from the action. Wildwood’s mammoth beach, as wide as three football fields in some places, provides plenty of space to carve out courses in the sand for monster truck races and professional motocross events.
In June it’s motorcycles and quad-bikes
motoring around a sand track on the beachfront at Schellenger Avenue. Thun- der in the Sand, a spring and fall AMA- sanctioned Motocross event, is open to ama- teur and professional Motocross riders – with thousands of dollars on the line. Miles of a circular road course – complete with hills – test the world’s best riders. Combine the roar of the ocean and alcohol-injected engines, add the Boardwalk and the result is Thunder at the Beach! Watch drivers of the monster rigs with names like Stone Crusher and Grave Digger race over hills and turn tricks in the freestyle arena right on the beach, vying for honors as King of
the Beach every October. Back in Ocean City, it’s Weird Contest Week features Wacky but Not Tacky Contests with French fries, saltwater taffy, cookie and paper clip sculpting, wet T-shirt throwing, the Miss and Mister Miscellaneous talent contests and Little Miss and Mister Chaos events that asks kids to make the most rack- et they can in two minutes. All that noise subsides in November with a Quiet Festi- val that kicks off with a Yawn Along to the tune of “Beautiful Dreamer.” There’s more – the fun continues with
First Night and First Day at the Beach celebrations on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. ■
