Dear Susanna, I often feel as though fear is taking hold of me and won’t let

go. Sometimes it’s something I can define, like being afraid to fly, and at other times the feeling is more complex. What types of techniques can I use to overcome these negative emotions? – Scaredy Kat

Dear Scaredy Kat, Fear is a multifaceted feeling. First, I advise you not to judge

your fear. Fear is natural; humans are born with fight or flight instincts. Fear keeps us safe. However, when anxiety takes over your life and becomes debilitating, it is time to take positive action. Many people have fear of the unknown while others fear something very specific, like spiders. Others are afraid of doing or taking a certain action because they have a paralyzing fear of failure.

I personally was afraid of the dark. Yes, really. I didn’t like

to look out windows at night, and you surely wouldn’t catch me wandering down an unlit street alone. Over the years I have faced my fear. Now I can go camping and will walk my dog at night. How did I master my fear? I would like to say it was easy, but it was actually quite a process. The first step is finding the root of your fear. Many individuals

can pinpoint the exact cause – maybe something happened to them as a child or there’s a more recent occurrence. Once identified, they are now able to work on releasing the negative emotions. When the origin cannot be identified through traditional methods, people who believe the soul transcends the physical body often turn to past life regression. A harmful situation encountered in a past life could manifest itself in this life. For example, an individual who drowned in a past life is inexplicably afraid of water today. Through a past life regression session, it is possible to trace

back to the point of time when a fear was ingrained into your being. Sometimes just knowing the cause is all it takes to release the grasp of fear. I have found meditation, combined with counseling, to be the most effective method of overcoming fear. In meditation, the individual is focused on surrounding themselves in a safe and peaceful environment. It teaches us to be mindful, builds emotional strength, and eliminates the struggle. Meditation, a form of brain training, can do amazing things for the human psyche! New research from the National Institutes of Health shows that being more present in the moment can lead to successfully overcoming phobias, fears and social anxieties. At Anahata, we offer meditation classes, books and CDs that are designed to give newcomers a solid foundation to maximize the benefits of meditation. For those interested in exploring the concept of past life

regression, I recommend the audio CD, Past Life Regression with the Angels, by Doreen Virtue which is available locally at Anahata Holistic Center in Naples. My store also carries a wide assortment of crystals that, when used in conjunction with meditation, create a powerful combination. To conquer your fears, you must be mentally committed to the ongoing process and prepared to confront powerful emotions. I wish you success throughout your journey! Namaste and bright Blessings.
