PULSE / Score Business Corner
written by: Gray Poehler
is to inspire, educate, and support future leaders in order to foster entrepreneurship and drive diversity and business growth in Collier and South Lee Counties. To accom- plish this, the Naples Chapter of SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business, will partner with local institutions of high- er learning to offer an Education Alliance & Scholarship Program that will focus on scholarships, internships, and career advi- sory services.
T The Scholarship Program’s goal is to
raise a minimum of $12,000 from grants and corporate donations in order to fund six $2,000 scholarships for eligible stu- dents interested in pursuing a career in small business. Students interested in the program must complete an application form provided by their respective school guidance counselor or advisor. The dead- line for application submissions is Novem- ber 15, 2012.
Recipients of the scholarships have the
option of participating with the Naples SCORE chapter and serving an internship. The intern will go through the formal men- toring process, and be provided the same opportunity as any other chapter member to utilize their expertise and skills. They will support the SCORE mission of pro- viding resources and expertise to the local small business community.
he mission of the SCORE program All intern candidates are selected with
the advice and consent of the college/ school program director, and if approved by the institution, course credit may be granted at the completion of the intern- ship. The intern will be in a non-pay sta- tus and is not entitled to wages for time spent in the training.
Intern training is
for the benefit of students working under the close observation of a senior SCORE mentor.
In addition to other duties, the interns
will have assignments of specific projects and weekly reports to their mentor(s). They will also act as student ambassadors for the school they attend in order to pro- mote SCORE intern programs, and to en- courage other students to take advantage of the services offered by SCORE.
Naples SCORE will establish, plan and
execute a pilot program with a local uni- versity to provide career mentoring ser- vices. Based on the success of this initia- tive, the program will be offered to other education alliance partners. Critical to the success of the program is financial support from the local corporate community. To raise the minimum $12,000 scholarships goal and other expenses incurred to pro- mote this program, interested donors can contact the Education Alliance Program Director, Vincent Izzi, at (239) 404-4415 or email
vinizzi45@gmail.com.
